Reserve grade

Confirmed it’s going to be re-introduced from next season.
I feel we will benefit from this massively with the amount of young lads we currently have coming through.
Also gives opportunities to those who are not quite ready for the step up to first team and may have been released otherwise.
I’m looking forward to going and watching them next year and believe we will compete well in the competition.

The only problem that stands out to me is finance how can we compete with the likes o the teams like Wigan,Hull, Saints ,Leeds who regularly pull in crowds of 10,000 plus?
I feel that it will take RL back to pre salary cap days with the bigger clubs monopolising the game and maybe taking all the young up and coming stars from the less well off clubs.Never the less I believe it may be a step forward. One other thing what will happen if a team is relegated how will they be able to support two teams.?

bradford and widnes are running reserve teams too so they can do it after being relegated

thewlis says it will cost an extra circa £100k to the club to run a reserves

the club arent in favour of it but have no choice

Your'e missing the point RL with gates of less than 5,000 at present if we are relegated these would probably fall to less than half thus the revenue with it plus moneys from Sky would fall dramatically. Also more than likely.contracted players contracts could be null and void if relegated plus the most promising young up and coming players may be tempted away from the Giants.I sincerely hope I am wrong.

The problem with the reserve system as far as i have been made aware is everyone has to be contracted, with a minimum of 20 players and 4 backroom staff it will mean A) finding the money and B) agreeing contracts with them. Some of the better Academy lads could be offered a better deal to sign for another club's reserves.
All the current academy players will have to be offered paid contracts rather than Academy/Scholarship deals and it could mean they will be lost to the game if they feel it isn't financially viable for them.

The reserve system is ok for the rich clubs or clubs who already operate a reserve side but for others it's a massive financial risk, unless they can get a central deal supported by the governing body but they don't seem to understand the financial implications it could have to run a mandatory side.
Time will tell i guess.

Our academy is already full time professional. Backroom staff will double up. Academy will step up sooner -as will scholars- some of whom have only played in a competitive game once this season.
The biggest problem is going to be for championship sides- who will no longer get players on loan. Teams like Fev have relied on those.
It makes absolute sense to run a reserve side.
