I've been doing the away games for many years and I used to try and get to the match as near to kick off as possible and leave straight after the hooter.
It used to mean two five hour trips with only a two hour break inbetween and get stuck in car parks, traffic and have endless frustration etc.
The North West on a Friday night was the worst, you could be a few minutes late and then run into jobsworth stewards and other petty bureaucrats and not get into the ground until a point where we had already effectively lost.
I've found the best thing to do now is to get up as if it is a workday and try and treat it as a day out.
I was out of my house before 8am for the Wakefield game and left Wakefield after 8pm so managed to get in 7 hours of drinking time, which wasn't bad.
It is a bit knackering the day after but it is much better and you can have a laugh with your mates and a word with the players.
Since about round 5 the players have come over to us at the end in every away game which has been fantastic, with the sole exception of the Magic weekend when we were stuck on the top tier, so they do appreciate it.
Cheers
Mark
