Options at base of the scrum for attack open up the game a bit, where as restart with a ptb where full defensive line is set does not. Still got six again for infringements at ptb so pace of game still pretty fast.
Should have taken the oppourtunity to scrap them. They are silly.
Way gone are the days when a Scrum was really a Scrum, and a Hooker did his job! Never forget as a youngster, Saints signing Bill Sayer st the end of his career, many fans were so angry, but in that final, Bill won so many scrums for us and the game.
When you have a sport in decline like RL I think you need to look at all aspects of the game. There is the argument that a scrum punishes mistakes more than a simple turnover due to the space created but it does it in an artificial way i.e. by having a load of big blokes grab hold of each other. Maybe restarting the game quickly without the opportuinty for rest achieves the same result.
Why not get rid of the ptb and just have a tap restart after every tackle would make it even quicker. Obsession with speeding the game up seems all pervasive. Scrums are still part of the game, for me making the scrum an actual scrum needs to be the focus and make players actually bind.
