It's a strange one with Matt King and the Wire fans. They were happy to sign of one the worlds best and highest profile outside backs but don't want to admit that he must have been offered a shed load to come over. He was a current Australia international and NSW player at the time of him signing and they had compatition from bigger clubs for his signature so it's not un-reasonable to think he must be on at least £200,000 per season. I don't see why they have a problem with admitting that. He came solely for the money in the same way that most players from the NRL do.
We have a guy in Fielden, that lets face it came for the money and like King has been a let down and i've never once heard a Wigan fan trying to deny he's on a fortune.
I won't deny he is on a fair whack, at the end of the day you don't ask for a release unless it is a sizeable sum. I just take exception to the ridiculous figures being banded about. I only know one thing that is factual; King is not the highest earner at Warrington and the highest earner is not on a salary above £200k.
My theory on his release is something along the lines of; at Melbourne he may have been on $200/220k Aus, we go in with an offer of £150k, with the exchage rate at the time providing an offer in the region of $340 Aus, with the shenagans of image rights, it may have taken it closer to $400 Aus. What would you do if the opportunity to almost double your salary for a guaranteed period came along?
Instant headline; King signs $1.6 million contract.
