Mate Tommy is no longer good enough for the 7 jersey - it’s not just me saying that either, plenty of others are too. His past exploits, as good as they were are utterly irrelevant in this conversation.
There’s no denying Smith hasn’t played against top grade opposition, it’s just pure fact. He’s been out on dual reg with Swinton and looked very impressive as he has been in the academy all season. He deserves a shot.
Failing that it’s a straight shoot between an aging and not good enough Tommy or a well below standard Sammut in the halves. No thanks.
You've missed my point. I'm referring to your remarks saying it's laughable to have Tommy as our 7. I was pointing out why Tommy is far more suitable and qualified at this stage in his career to be our starting 7 that Smith who's played only minutes at SL level. Surely that's just obvious...or should be.
I'm not saying Smith isn't good or won't be a world beater, truth is; no one really knows just yet. But to throw him at the deep end isn't only a massive risk for the team, but also irresponsible of the club to put so much pressure and expectation on such a young man who's barely played SL.
I don't think giving Smith the starting role in the first team should even be debated to the honest, it's that worrying of a shout.
I reiterate what I said previously, develop Smith properly; like we do our young halves. Let him develop in stages, he's passed the test so far, give him the next step up and see how he deals with it. Then if he's continually improving in time he'll earn and naturally become our starting half.
