I would say an apology is getting off lightly. When a country still benefits from those actions centuries ago and the ones who suffered are still suffering centuries later I would say damn right there should be an apology. An apology isn't saying people today are to blame but what it should mean is those that did take part in such things are no longer revered or celebrated.
