Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good
-
sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go
-
Saint94..Every team is in your feckin shadow, we all know

I know Wigan have been searching everywhere for a centre(s)
It's a major problem for Wigan and RL.

The problem is that any yooung players with any size or real athletic ability get put in the forwards. Joel Tomkins has the physique to be a top centre but was brought up as a forward. I'm sure Greg Inglis would have ended up in the SR had he been brought through over here. Just look at the size of centres in the NRL compared to over here. Same for wingers, we rarely see big British wingers who are really athletic like Yow Yeh, Monaghan, Richards, King. They are all from down under, because anyone that size in Britain seems to end up in the forwards.

No he shouldn't!!! Why should he? He's had his chance and been nothing more than poor, he's not a Wigan player. He didnt even impress on loan at Salford. Im sick of all this "give him a chance", he's not 18 for god sake he's been knocking around the first team for about 6 years and never done anything to impress anyone. He rarely beats a man, he lacks pace, his defence is average and he poses no threat the opposition what so ever.

I think your forgetting his form in 2010 which earned him a call up to the England squad, he was better than "solid" and performed a lot stronger than an out of position Joel Tomkins so yes why not give a player in our squad a chance?

his form in 2010 was down to one thing/preson only, Martin Gleeson

plus, he played on the wing, not at centre like JT did

That's rubbish Gleeson was awesome but Goulding stepped up and put in some classy performances the guy deserves credit and a chance in the first team next season.

Talking of Gleeson, there's a rumour he'll be turning out for Widnes next year.

he played well on the WING outside a world class CENTRE

next season you'd assume he would be asked to play centre, a position he has not done well in in the first team. If we have better options we should take them

He played on the wing for a Grand final winning team, my grandma could have scored some of the tries that Gleeson put him in for.

Why though? Because he scored a few tries 2 seasons ago. Goulding didn't shine at Salford on loan, he's never done anything to prove himself at Wigan, I can honestly say hand on heart he is the only winger I have actually never seen take a man on and beat him, his defence is average, he's bad under a high ball and he lacks pace for a winger. Are you seriously saying you would play Goulding centre next season? You must be, because if Charnley and Richards stay fit he doesn't get anywere near a wing spot. If Gelling is half as good as Carmont he immediately gets in before Goulding.

And please dont say you would play him on the wing and Charnley centre, our right side defence would be a turnstile.

I think you could have put any professional wingman in the team and he would have scored all the tries Goulding did.

He scooted strongly and was solid in defence but that was it at best.

Add to that he was playing on the wing not at centre.

Its a sad indication of how lacking in outside backs we are when Goulding gets an international call up for England.

That's more than a little harsh. From what I saw Goulding did impress on loan and the Salford fans that I know were very impressed with him. Even though it was an unfamiliar position he improved week after week.

Also how is he bad under the high ball? He dropped 4 cross field kicks in his time at Wigan, two in the same game this year when he was dropped, one against Hull this year and one against Leeds last year which wasn't so much a drop as a fumble when challenged by Ryan Hall.
Other than that he's caught every single kick. Hardly bad under the high ball.

He might not have the pace of a winger, he's not exactly slow but definitely not quick enough for a winger. He's still shown the presence of mind to improvise, such as putting in accurate little kicks when chased down on the wing allowing others to score (Leuluai and Roberts have both scored from Goulding doing this). He's proven that he's got good quick hands, the last time he showed that was at Bradford in the Challenge Cup when he provided Richards with the try.

I'm far from convinced by Goulding but bloody hell you'd think he was the worst player in the world going off some comments on here. When he was given a starting spot under Noble he struggled, as many if not most young centres do. He was dropped, put back in, dropped again, shipped out on loan. There was no consistency, whereas players like Shenton, Welham, Atkins etc improved because they were given consistency and allowed to keep playing even when they made mistakes. Welham in particular has improved a lot defensively, even though he still isn't great.
Without any consistency Goulding was never going to have much chance to improve any defensive issues. When Madge took over he was given a fresh start and forced his way to becoming a regular on the wing and did well in what was still an unfamiliar position.

We've now lost two centres and have to work with what's available. Gelling has to prove he's worth a place just like the rest of the squad so he'll no doubt be competing with Goulding for the right centre spot. Both players should get an equal opportunity to prove they are the right man for the job.
