I honestly can't think of a single positive on this one.

He's signed on loan - what's the point with a small handful of games.

He's just training with the squad - not the best week to bring someone new into the bubble/squad...

He's coaching some of the younger lads - what's the point in Lam then?

I'd be surprised if quite a few aren't now asking that final question.

As happens so often a decade after a guru coach leaves, there is a real feeling of malaise at present. Graham Lowe revolutionised the Wigan club. John Monie continued that, but from then on it was all downhill, each new appointee sub-par compared to the one before until eventually there were people in charge who you couldn't believe were coaching Wigan.

History could now be about to repeat itself. Michael Maguire changed everything dramatically for the better. Shaun Wane was less polished but a great motivator who continued to win trophies. Now, however (thanks mainly to Shaun Edwards), we've got Adrian Lam, who seems to offer considerably less as a coach than any of those men.

But this won't go unnoticed. If we don't win the Grand Final, which seems very unlikely at present, I can't see how we can keep him on.

Agreed. IL didn't renew Noble's contract which at the time no one saw coming and it was kept under wraps until we were out of the competition. I wouldn't be surprised if we had the same situation with Lam. Only difference I suppose is IL didn't hire Noble so may not have felt as much loyalty to him.

Graham Lowe and more so John Monie in his first spell at the club together with Graham West were lucky in being provided with a conveyor line of top class players signed from both within our own game and down under by the gang of four led by Uncle Mo!

I bet Adrian Lam wished he was so lucky to have so many star players at his disposal!

I bet hes glad were not millions in debt either and having to make do with the following due to their financial mis management.

Doc Murray
Shem tatupu
Stuart lester
Paul koloi
Ian sherratt
Gael tallec
Lee Hansen

Or nearly 10 years later when because we couldnt play by the rules we were circumventing salary caps, treating the youngsters almost as child slaves, throwing big money at 4 or 5 players every year, dealing with overseas signings like
Davico
Seu seu
Vaeliki
Moran
Gregson

Complimented by dips Into the English market with
Macdonald
Botham
Jonkers
Macavoy
Jordan James

I get tou dont like Rads and Leneghan, you've made it quite obvious, but dont think a lot of us will forget your revisionist history

I get what you are saying, but I disagree on some parts.

The problems at the end of the golden age - and it was a golden age for us and the wider British game imo, weren't as black and white as people make out imo. It's almost revisionary to say they were imo.

Opposition fans & supporters of the the anti Wigan cap (or that's what it should have been called) love to point to our financial collapse as a reason why our 90s model can't ever be seen again. The argument is more nuanced than that tho.

Stupid mistakes were undoubtedly made and the signing of Offiah at the same time as the doomed Whitbread stand is often raised as an example. Sadly the truth is that, had Maurice not signed Offiah, then financial hole created by the stand wouldn't have been as great as they were and we'd still have had a team capable of dominating too. Who knows how it would have gone from there?

Rolling out the same tired reasoning whenever someone suggests we should push for better signings is what's holding us back as a sport and plays into the anti Wigan agenda. There's a happy medium between success and ruin and, imo, we're a hell of a long way off that. I think IL sees that too, hence why he's often the guy trying to push for reform.
