He was named in the squad.

Also he has not been match fit for 2 years, so long before he put pen to paper for us.

I’m not particularly slating the guy but George Burgess needs to leave now and of his own accord. It’s all very sad when you’re injured to the extent that he appears to be but he must have known how he felt when he signed and rumours about his hip had been doing the rounds for some time. Obviously, the club needs to back players when they are badly injured and see them through to a full recovery but George has been injured from day one whilst taking a marquee spot and salary that goes with it. We have been more than patient with him for half of his contract. He should now do the decent thing and rip up the rest of his contract which will enable us to move on and continue planning for next year. I hope IL has had a gentle word in his ear.

 aye alright. Never mind the mortgage, supporting his family etc, as long as Wigan get more cap space.

To be fair, Wigan can't afford that to be their main consideration indefinitely.

They are a business, not a charity.

I agree that contracts need to be honoured, but the question will have to be asked eventually: is GB honouring his part of it.

He might get "de registered" so his wage doesnt count at all on the cap. Quite a few teams have done it in the past. Giants did it this year with Uate before he decided to head back home.

Well not indefinitely but for two years they kind of have to unless we get to the medical retirement stage. I don't think we're near that as he's available to play.

I can't help wondering how much of the time he's signed on for he will miss before we start looking seriously at his viability as a SL player.

I'm hoping we don't hang around until the end of his deal approaches.

I agree that you can't just rip up a contract, and I feel for GB himself ... but at present Wigan are light-years away from getting value for money.

Oh no arguments from me there, but I'm fairly sure their legal (and moral!) obligation is just to do everything they can to get him fit and healthy. This would probably go towards a medical retirement case anyway as they can say "We had hip specialists and physios working with him for X length of time but still couldn't get him fit and healthy to play." right now surely anyone investigating would say "He played three weeks ago, he was available to play on Friday. You have failed to demonstrate his injury is going to prevent him ever playing rugby again."

There would have to be an element of him wanting to call it quits for us to be able to part ways. If he doesn’t then there’s little we can do and he can’t be blamed for that. We need to probably ask what happened during a medical? Or did one even take place? And if not, then what do we do going forward? It surely would be worthwhile shelling out the cost of a medical facility completing whatever tests are necessary, prior to signing players on huge contracts. I get the club may not bother or certainly may not go too in-depth for a project signing or a squad player but I’d like to hope they do for guys on marquee money, especially when rumours are flying around about their fitness anyway.

He may well have been ‘available to play’ but, from what I have seen, he has been nowhere near fit enough to play. And by a long way.

I can see the logic behind his signing and I applauded it at the time. There’s been either an absolute catalogue of errors here (who the hell undertook and assessed his medical?) or something very strange is going on.
