The whole situation is a mess and the cap doesn't make it any easier.

In the real world, the club and player would come to a mutual agreement and move on. GB can't be enjoying it & the club don't want to drag this out for another 2 years either.

Sadly it doesn't seem like you can do that under the cap, as the club would still be liable for his wages. It almost then forces us to keep him around, or keep prodding and poking him to see if he gets better.

I get why teams can't just rip up contracts, but this is a completely different situation to say that of trying to shift a dud like Escare or Clark. If GB is fit, he's in the elite bracket, the other two were just cr@p and not good enough.

In football if you don't play a certain % of games then you can be medically released from your contract, does anybody know if that's relevant in Super League

There’s also the question of medical insurance to compensate us. Anyone out there a whizz on sports clubs in general and the insurance taken out to cover their own employees in the event of not being able to play due to injury and/or medical issues?

I’m not particularly slating the guy but George Burgess needs to leave now and of his own accord. It’s all very sad when you’re injured to the extent that he appears to be but he must have known how he felt when he signed and rumours about his hip had been doing the rounds for some time. Obviously, the club needs to back players when they are badly injured and see them through to a full recovery but George has been injured from day one whilst taking a marquee spot and salary that goes with it. We have been more than patient with him for half of his contract. He should now do the decent thing and rip up the rest of his contract which will enable us to move on and continue planning for next year. I hope IL has had a gentle word in his ear.

Did the club not conduct a medical? If he passed that then regardless of how he felt or what he knew at the time, he was given a contract...

That's what I just said. He played three weeks ago and was available on Friday. That isn't going to make for a compelling argument that he can never play again due to medical issues. Pretty sure they'll need to be in more of a "We have been trying to get him fit enough to play for months but we have exhausted all options. He will never play rugby again" kind of scenario rather than "He can play now but his injury means he isn't very good."

You would sincerely hope a medical was carried out. The question then follows as how he managed only a few minutes of his debut before being withdrawn. He struggled from the off and looked as unfit as any player I’ve seen. Everything from then on has been rather strange.

He was in the squad and played in the semi final.

Because there's no way we would otherwise have signed Singleton to a three year contract knowing he had an injury that would keep him out for his first four games, crazy stuff.

There is a difference between being injured and being chronically injured.

I think when Sam wanted to come home we went for him for fear of anyone else getting him. At the time I was close to someone connected to the club who told me his injury was misdiagnosed and mismanaged by NZ which was potentially career ending.

Burgess injury was well known in the NRL and also regarded as being chronic.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but if we are not doing due diligence on such investments not once but twice then that is a criminal error.
