IIRC Thornley opted to go to college and study rather than train with Wigan full time. He left the club at 18/19 years old, very rarely do we see players of such a young age playing first team.

Yes thats correct at St John Rigby IIRC.

My opinion has nothing to do with the fact he's a personal friend of mine, it's based on the fact that when he left more than a few people thought it was a massive loss (at that time - just before someone jumps down my neck) he did 'cut' it at Wigan and he probably would of played in SL, just because he's not cutting it in RU hardly means he's a bad player in either code. IMO it says he's probably more suited to RL.

Everyone's entitled to their view on this, but I would just hope that any RL club - especially Wigan - would think long and hard before handing a contract to a former RL player who never got picked for the first team, and who when he went to play in RU, barely got picked for the first team there either.

Shaun Wane has coached Thornley in the past and will know more about the lads ability than the rest of us.If he thinks he is good enough for Wigan then it is he who will make the decision on whether to re sign him,so although everyone is entitled to an opinion they will all be irrelevant at the end of the day.

thornley , before he left for union was another strong and talented player. Although as stated about marsh. Thornley would rather run his winger into touch than pass the ball.Very talented individual but not a team player

Funnily enough, I was talking to Scott Barrow on Saturday night (ex Saints and current RU) and he was telling me about Thornley being on loan and how good he is. He said Thornley was a quality player and a big loss to RL.

If he wants to come back I wouldn't mind one bit

Hang on a second there, your saying he never got picked for the first team at Wigan and therefore using that against him?

A. He was too young
B. He was not ready
C. There were established players playing in his position before him
D. Noble was in charge at that time and was notorious for not picking youngsters *AHEM* Sam Tomkins *AHEM*

I'm sorry but thats bloody ridiculous trying tio make out he's a bad RL player because he never played SL for Wigan. As for the RU aspect, I still maintain that some players are more suited to one code. Iain may well be one of those players.

Okay, so for you the judges are still out on his RL abilties, though as others have said, lots of the other Wigan lads are on college courses, and they don't seem to let it affect their on-field performances.

But that aside, given the number of top RU players who've failed to make it in RL over the years, I'd be very wary of signing a poor one. This 'suited to the game' business is a bit of an excuse in my book. Maybe for a halfback or forward, but a big, strong, fast threequarter should be able to make an impact in either code.

However, you may be right. Everyone deserves a second chance ... so long as he's prepared to come on a second-chancer's wages.
