There is an element of it being Saints, of course there is, but I think any club would be getting talked about when they’ve gone in to the sort of meltdown Saints did Friday. The only time I see/hear players, officials and the crowd going in to that sort of tantrum mode is at Catalans. It’s not an excuse but I think they feel there’s a bit of them (as in the English) against us that goes on and while it’s not true, you do always have that in your mind, much in the same way as when we get an Aussie ref in games against Australia.
Not sure that the players and officials were in meltdown. Percival granted was extremely angry and had to be spoken to by Walmsley but Wellens handled it really well I thought with his post-match comments, giving Leeds credit and making no excuses. I also loved the fact he said he is seeking clarification with the officials this week as if shoulder charges are now allowed then we have players who love to tackle and he will now tell them to do that
Welsby reacted to what he thought was an illegal shot, lots of players do similar so not sure what the fuss was there.
A small section of fans were embarrassing unfortunately. Even leaving the ground there was fighting somewhere as stewards were running and you could hear the noise. Not nice when you have your 10 and 12 year old lads with you. That smacks of being sore losers and its disappointing.
I was more bothered with our performance. We missed 54 tackles, a number which we probably struggle to beat in a month if not longer. We looked shot to pieces, leggy and falling off tackles.
I've said before there is a blueprint to beating Saints and thats going wide early to nullify our compressed defence. If a team has the speed and ability to do this we'll struggle. If some passes had stuck for Castleford last week then they would've scored more points.
Given that we have lost Batchelor for 10 weeks, then for Sironen and Matautia to continue with their late hits was ridiculous. They spent half of last season sat in the stands and know what's coming. They have to be better. Hurrell just lost his head with that one, very uncharacteristic from him
However with all that said and how poor and ill disciplined we were, Makinson kicks that easy penalty that he missed and we win the game. Its certainly no time to overreact.
The WCC will impact on us this season, I said that before a ball was kicked and we won't be winning the LLS this season. Its how we respond now that's key
