Correct. I don't know how much Williams wanted, but the concept that we shouldn't play more for a player than he is worth (regardless of cap implications) should be pretty obvious. We don't have unlimited money to spend.

Pretty simple stuff isn't it.

Don't get me wrong, I accept that William's value might have risen with the lack of quality alternatives (supply and demand) but the club will have known that and factored it in. It's still not an excuse for paying over what he's worth tho. It benefits no one but GW.

I’m stumped how some people seem to think we should’ve given Williams the world because only 75k counts on the cap. It’s as though the extra on top of the 75k was to be paid in Monopoly money. Giving a guy way more than he’s actually worth can open up a whole world of problems.

Williams mind seemed to be made up on joining Wire very early doors by all accounts. I think we know why that was.

I said in my OP that paying more for a player isn't something that big clubs do. Like you said, when a club does that - it can open up a world of problems.

The Storm are great that this. You only need to look at Dale Finucane, he's OOC and being chased hard by smaller/less successful clubs. That's driving his value up, but the Storm know what he's worth and have offered him that. That doesn't mean they don't rare him btw, they just take an bigger picture approach. Just because Wests are in a mess and see him as a potential saviour, doesn't mean the Storm should match that offer, regardless of how good he is.

Especially after so long of empty stadiums. It wasn't that long ago we were worrying about having to get the begging buckets out.

Correct. There is clearly some cloth cutting going on and that’s understandable. We wanted a couple of props and we’ve got them. We wanted to keep French and we’ve kept him. We’ve got a replacement for Manfredi sorted (although Bibby may still get that spot) and I expect we’ll sign a centre and a halfback. They not all all be household names but they look competitive enough and the biggest signing will be that of a new coach. Add in the emergence of more juniors in KPP and O’Neill, who both look too class prospects and the extra year under the belts of guys like Havard, Partington and Smithies and I think we can feel reasonably calm about 2022, especially given how I feared it was looking a few weeks back.

Finances don’t seem to be causing Wire any issues.

Latest name they are linked with is Tom Johnson and they are looking at paying a free for him.

With my Trinity hat on it’s a good bit of business as he sadly spends most of the season on the treatment table so they should cash in when money is a constant issue for them.

Could be great for the player too, new coach and new environment may see him
Get on the field more and realise his potential.

One thing is obvious though Wire are really backing Powell by opening the cheque book.

Invariably, spending big doesn't always work imo. Look at the Titans or Bulldogs as prime examples. Both were down as being in the top 8 before the season started. You can go too far and bring in too many players.

Invariably, the truly best teams are one that have a real nucleus/core of home grown players. That's not a dig at Wire, it's just a reality.

Wire have been spending big for years now. Not sure if they've got bang for their buck from it tho?

How they fit it under the cap is anyone’s guess but I have no issue with it. The game needs more Wire’s and less of the clubs happy to sit on their hands and level down.

If Wire don’t win the big one in these next couple of years during the covid hit clubs are facing, whilst they have a rich backer, then they never will.

both teams with an unlimited cap space, how much were the storm over the cap when they were busted? Both team have repeatedly signed players from other teams over the years
