Think the issue with Wire is that that group of players are paid well and won very little in return,sometimes a rebuild is needed and I’d argue Warrington are at that point now..but is Powell the right man for the rebuild well clearly the board think he is a bit of short term pain etc with the hope of better things to come.

Only time will tell but let’s not pretend that group of players at Warrington have produced what on paper at least they should be capable of.

All feels very Wigan 06ish to me. Good coach on paper, who replaces club stalwarts with his own guys. That didn't end well and this won't either.

Warrington’s issue is the deeply buried awful culture. Purchasing players on huge contracts on reputation alone with no thought to how they’ll gel into the club was poor decision making and a strategy proven not to work. You end up with players signing purely for the £££ and who can blame them?

Drive out the rot. Bring in players that yes are quality, but also bring something positive cultural wise. Invest in the academy. It’s a process that takes a few years (Wigan 2006-2010 springs to mind) but a process that pays off. It’s not about bringing in the best players. It’s about bringing the right players in. Tommy, Field, French, Richard’s, Carmont. None were signings at the time you’d have sat back and gone “phwoar, what a signing”. It’s only now we sit back and say that.

That’s the difference between Wigan/Saints and Warrington. And until that changes they’ll be the perennial “should do better” club.

Powell will struggle to turn that club around IMO. They have a good youth set up but he isn’t a coach that backs youth and any top side is built on that. He has been a master at Cas of getting the best out of cast offs and players with points to prove but Wire don’t need to deal in them and having a culture of a club who throws money around, doesn’t lend itself to players having a mentality of proving people wrong and fighting against the big fish.

His own guys that don’t like him or his methods but couldn’t turn down the money.

I disagree. He had players at Cas who had a point to prove for a reason. He turned them around, brought through Trueman. At Wire he has used academy prospects which have yielded better results. I don’t think he’s afraid to utilise youth nor do I think he’s a small club man. If he can get rid of the dead wood and bring in players who actually fit into a good culture and not money sucking vultures, they will be a force to be reckoned with. If he gets the bullet before that, they’ll be for a long time a ‘big club’ who wins nothing.

For all the plaudits that Powell has had, other less vaunted coaches Kear, Agar and Radford have also won trophies. I'm sure any Cas fan would have preferred a challenge cup to a league leaders shield.
