A lot of positives to take out of saturday IMO. We played pretty poorly for the majority of the game, much like in the cup final, with an error strewn display. However, this time we weren’t able to pull it off and Saints were deserved winners.

We looked really comfortable after 40 mins, considering the amount of ball Saints had due to our errors. I think if we have an even share of ball against them, we win. That being said, important lessons to be learned, and we would rather it happen at Magic than in the play offs.

I walked away from the game really positive about our chances for further silverware this season. I am convinced we will meet them in a one-off game in the play offs and it might just be the best game yet between the two sides this season.

The less said about the refereeing calls the better. We definitely had some really poor calls against us (no try before half time, Welbsy try and the Singleton red).

What was wrong with the Welsby try?.

I think it's the LMS knock on that was missed he's referring to.

Unless I missed them there were no in goal touch judges.

I found this very strange as there were a few calls throughout the day which would have been assisted by another set of eyes.

I’m assuming this was because all teams had the screen, however there were a few 50/50 calls in the lead up to tries where an in goal touch judge would have been useful and in a good position to provide some valid input.

They don't use them with a VR, but it seems strange not to have as many eyes as possible. You can still use the technology (not that it seems to matter) but maybe refs wouldn't be so reliant on it if they had that little bit more help.

LMS knocked Batemans offload on. Incredible it wasn’t checked tbh. I saw Ian Smith trying to say it went backwards on social media, which was pushing ‘backing your mates’ too far. LMS hand goes forward in to the ball as he’s falling and he dives past where it lands but it’s absolutely a knock on.

I’m not sure it alters the result mins. The better side won on the day and Saints got what I felt they deserved over the 80 minutes.

I've not watched the game back, but on the day Bateman was going nuts at the ref and pointing back to the play. He must have been asking him to check something. The ref just shook his head and said no.

Like I've been saying for years, they couldn't care less about getting it right. They are their for their own egos and benefit. The sooner SL bring in a captain's challenge the better. We need to take as much power off them as possible.

Field asked him to check as did another player I think. Can't believe they didn't.

It's one of those things though. We complain when refs don't make decisions and use the screen constantly, but at the same time I feel like if the technology is there then use it. Perhaps the NRL method of the bunker checking every try (they do this in RU also) before the kick is taken would be another benefit. Ref awards the try, but then the VR checks over the last play and pulls up anything they consider an issue.

One thing I will add is that it probably would’ve been pointless them checking it. He’d clearly have sent it up as a try and they wouldn’t have turned it over because it’s one of those where they’d go ‘I’ve not enough evidence to turn it over’ even though everyone can see the outcome. Much like the refereeing and disciplinary system needing a complete overhaul, so does the system for sending up potential try’s for checks with decisions already attached. The captains challenge might be worth it but I have no confidence that they wouldn’t back their mates there as well. That seems to happen in the NRL from the bits I’ve seen.
