It doesn't look like we are going to but the performances of both Gelling and Sarge v Saints should tell you neither is good enough to be a first team centre.

They may be able to do it against the likes of Widnes but are just way out of their depth against decent opposition. I can't see that changing much even if they play the rest of this season out in the centres as I don't think they will improve greatly on what we see now.

In any case we can't afford a "trainee" as one of our first choice centres when the other (Thornley) isn't the finished article himself yet (though he is a centre).

Ultimately I think Gelling could be a beast in the back row and Sarge could be a good full back but as centres I doubt either will be good enough.

Someone get George Carmont out of retirement!

Gelling has been outstanding, Sarge has got real potential and Bateman played as good as Carmont ever did in his first appearance in the 3/4s

We look good for the next 2-3 years IMO

It looks as though we are going with what we've got re the centre positions.
Gelling and Thornley are the obvious players for the 3 and 4 shirts.
So who do we turn to when injuries occur?
Sarginson is a good player but has been found out big time re his defence both against Saints and at Cas. Joel can play centre but again defending in that position isn't his best Rugby. Gildart is only 18 in August so can't be considered a replacement for a long term injury.
If we are going with what we've got then Bateman has to be considered as we've plenty cover for the back row. Hughes shouldn't be considered for centre either!
Not an easy one for the club.

Todd Carney epitomises class on the field, off it is another matter obviously. But I don't think he is the monster that the Aussie press make him out to be. Maybe a move to Super League would be good for him. Whoever gets him would be getting one hell of a player that's for sure. Definitely worth the risk IMO.

He couldn't get a visa last time as he had been criminally convicted of drink driving, probably on a suspended sentence. Not a visa expert but guessing 2/3 years later it isn't set in stone that he won't get one. As distasteful as pissing in your mouth is, won't affect a visa application.

We would be mad not to try and get him.

Probably won't get a visa, but I'd not be concerned if he came onto the books.

If and when Taylor goes hopefully that will be the last departure. Looking at what we've got in every position then and taking in to consideration bringing loan players like Greenwood and Tomkins back in I think we need a centre and a prop. I'm happy with Thornley and Gelling fighting for one spot but we need more in the other position. At prop i'd be happy with Flower starting with 2 from Clubb, Pettybourne, Crosby, Greenwood, Sutton or Dudson on the bench but we need a real quality starter to replace Taylor and go alongside Flower.

If we can sort that out it takes pressure off whoever replaces Green as well because they'll be playing behind a strong pack and team. If we go in just making do with what we've got then that 6 shirt could become a real issue.

I think Taylor and Dudson will go, which would leave us needing to bring in one more prop alongside Tautai IMO.
