There was an article this week or last week in the league express on the matter. There are currently 5 clubs totally against any idea of the marquee exemption; Huddersfield, Castleford, Wakefield, Hull fc and Hull KR.



The more interesting fact was of the remaining 7, no one can agree on how the rule should actually work. Unless they can find a way unanimously agreed upon, it won't get through... Which would be a shame ...

Well, you'd hope an outbreak of common sense might happen and they will agree in principle, then thrash out the details before the end of the year. That's what happened with the restructuring of the ladder, isn't it?

Difference being that if they followed that model no one could effective organise their cap for the following year without knowing the rules?

Correct. They'd just have to get their fingers out, wouldn't they? Gods forfend, someone were to actually take charge.

Can't see Huddersfield going for it, they probably wouldn't want the extra expense given their low crowds and massive stadium. Hull KR probably a no as well. I reckon:

Not sure about HKR they are the only team on that list that can vote either way they seem to have ambition. As for Wakey do they not vote with Leeds on everything.

That surprises me, surely Hull FC would be in a better position to make use of a marquee player rule than Cas, Huddersfield, Hull KR, Wakefield and Widnes, thus giving them a competitive advantage which could help push them into the top 8

Do we know what those who are likely to be against this are citing as rationale?

Lack of ambition? At least that's what I assume will be why Hull FC vote against it. Perennial underachiever title well earned.

Teams will vote against it because it's easier to keep the rest at their level then to show some drive and ambition to improve things.

Would be a shame as he's found his feet recently, but I can't say I'd be surprised. Like Carney he only came north to escape the "scandals", now that's largely gone off the radar I'm sure he thinks it's time to return. Not sure where he'd fit in though. I don't know if he's that much of a star player to be able to dictate all the T&Cs he might like.

There's no source behind the story, not even an out of context quote from Gelling. Load of bobbins if you ask me.

I like Gelling but I'm not sure he would get into any NRL teams,not at centre anyway.Unless he is homesick,which from his persona doesn't seem the case I think he will stay here.

I'd argue that he's not met his first challenge yet, which is absolutely cementing himself into the Wigan team.



I like Gelling, but I think the regular brainfarts still prevent him being the ultra-reliable player we all yearn for him to be.



If everyone was fit, he wouldn't be on the first team sheet every time.

First thing I thought when I read it. There was an interview with him on Wigan TV a few weeks ago where he was talking about applying for British citizenship and starting uni over here. Just reads like v lazy journalism to me - he's not OOC, no solid link with any particular club and no quote from the player himself.



FWIW I do think he'd do pretty well out there. He's shown that when he concentrates and actually applies his skill to his obvious physical attributes then he's a very dangerous attacking player. I agree with Cruncher though, he's been first choice in the Wigan side for around 12 months now, he's still very much a work in progress who could reach another couple of levels.

Was just going to post the same thing. He mentioned in that interview how settled he is and like you say, that he's applying for citizenship and starting Uni towards the end of the year.



It all seems a bit like an agent trying to get more money out of Wigan.

We are at full cap so I don't think spending is an issue, just that we spend it poorly. Not against the marquee rule as long as it is 1 player 1 team and a home grown player

It's not that long ago Gelling signed a two year deal.

Sounds like his agent is sounding out possible clubs for the future, nothing more.
