I think with Powell out there's a risk of making so many changes that the good things we've done so far this year could be disrupted. Surely the best thing is to keep as much consistency as possible. Our best player this season has been Field because he's so dangerous at fullback. Is it essential that he's moved into the halves? No. So keep Field in the position where he's been arguably the best player in Super League so far.
Do we need Cust to play at hooker? No. We may have lost Leuluai for a long time if not the whole season so why move our other first choice half and start playing with a completely untried partnership several weeks in? He's been playing reasonably well at 6 and we need some consistency so surely common sense says Cust plays 6.
We've lost our scrum half, so play our back up scrum half in Smith. We've lost our hooker, so play our back up hooker in O'Neill. Yes, Shorrocks may also have to cover at 9 which I'm not a fan of. I don't think he's terrible there but I think he's been massively underused as a 13 and in his last two games has made positive impacts when he's come on.
There may be a way of moving Cust to 9 late on and then getting Field into the halves for a short while, but in general I don't understand the idea behind completely disrupting the team by moving players who have established themselves in a certain position when we've already lost key players around them.
