Kolpack players : Thu Feb 13, 2020 2:40 pm
How is this going to be regulated now we have left the EU,its just that this coming cricket season is the last one that you can sign them as extra overseas players,as of next year they will count on the overseas quota. Are we as a sport going to be affected

The easiest way would be to put the overseas quota/non fed trained up to 7.

SAINTS THE ORIGINAL AND PERENNIAL CHEATS

For sale full Saints kit (circa 1989). Shirts in pristine condition, but shorts badly soiled.

For 27 - 0 you get a trophy
For 75 - 0 you get sod all.

Wigan had eight in a row
Saints have five in a row

The BEST way would be to cut it to four.

How does that work legally as in these players are now foreign nationals?

From the linked article above:

"In cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board has informed clubs that all Kolpak registrations will be terminated at the end of the 2020 season. "

Seems fair enough to me. Or do people who voted for Brexit because they think we have too many immigrants think RL should be made a special case? Rather hypocritical if so.

Of course just doing as cricket does, doesn't stop the Kolpak players applying for visas to come and work here just as any other person from outside the UK can but why should we increase the quota? The Kolpak thing was always a loophole that has been exploited far too much in my opinion with some clubs such as Bradford used to, taking the mick with how many they had on their books.

Five overseas players is plenty and if in a year that leaves the sport and some clubs with an issue, well that is just one of the unintended consequences of Brexit.

The maximum number of players from outside Europe should be be restricted to four and the present nonsense of players from down under being exempt because of different loopholes should be ended.

I say Europe, not because of Brexit, but because of the fact that we are supposed to be playing in a European Super League.

Kolpak registrations will be null and void therefore the players will have to apply for a work permit.

I agree with Rogues and think we should reduce the number of overseas players though this would need to be done over a few years with appropriate notice.

That needs to be done gradually. If it’s done too quick it could be disastrous for some clubs. Us, Leeds, Saints and Warrington would be fine but the likes of Wakey, KR, Salford would be decimated.

Don’t Hull have a lot of Kolpak players as well?

The only way around it is to temporarily increase the overseas quota while existing contracts are honoured. Even than that isn’t a guarantee this will avoid problems as RL can’t take it as a given the Home Office will grant the necessary visas or there won’t be mistakes made by clubs and players that remove their right to work here.

Existing contracts will probably have three years or less to run so it still leaves clubs who might otherwise have renewed these contracts or brought in other Kolpak players to replace them with an issue. However the last thing I want to see is a permanent increase in the overseas quota so clubs can carry on as they have been because that would just encourage other clubs who don’t have so many Kolpak players to join in and stop producing their own players.

Probably yes.

You’ll have to forgive me here but this conversation is way beyond my knowledge and understanding of these issues but it’s clear to see, as you quite rightly pointed out, that this is a consequence of Brexit.

[prays it doesn’t descend into a Brexit debate]
