Saints being investigated for paying players to injure opposition players, Warner & Favre are 2 known targets.

Peter King says the punishment is likely to be more than that given out for Spygate.

Deservedly so. This is much worse than Spygate. Injuries are a part of the game but deliberately trying to injure opposition players just isn't on.

There are a lot of allegations/statements out there about it at the minute so it largely depends on which can be proven to be true before the punishments can be determied, I expect Goodell to go hard on them though.

Gregg Williams is seemingly the main guy (from the coaching staff) and i'd expect him to be banned from the league for X number of years, if the allegations that he ran/knew about/condoned the bounty system, especially since the allegations are it was also present in Washington. Apparently the owner also told the GM to get it stopped, which he failed to do (although i don't know why he wouldn't just sack him when he refused/didn't) so I expect he'll be gone too. Monster fine is on its way for Sean Payton too IMO and I wouldn't be suprised if they are banned from the postseason for X number of years.

I expect some of the key players to also receive lengthy bans. The main one that i've read is that allegedly Vilma put up $10,000 for Favre. Now if that is true then he should be banned for the entire year if not longer.

There is a long way to go yet in this story but I think they are seriously going to get hammered if some of this stuff is true.

Go watch the video of Manning getting injured v the Redskins in 06, the player (coached by Williams...) twists Mannings' helmet right off and that is apparently the hit that started causing him neck trouble, when you know of this program Williams ran in Washington and New Orleans it does make you think.

Can't see them getting banned for the post season. Not sure how that helps anyone. I expect all the individuals named will get suspensions,hefty fines and that the Saints will lose a couple of 1st round picks.

Gregg Williams looks likes he's loved. Read reports that he was doing this when HC of the Bills as well as at the Redskins and Saints. Think we might be in the market for a new DC soon.

The Saints don't have a first round pick this year so taking the franchise tag off them this year + next years first rounder and a fine would be a possibility, Schefter was saying that just the tag being taken off them isn't nearly enough.

It's not supposed to, it's a punishment!

I think it is the best punishment available for any team (personally i'd ban them from the postseason for however many years they've had the bounty system in place (how long has Williams been DC?) especially given Goodell is big on player safety. The main complaints/suggestions/allegations appear to be based on Favre/Warner in the play-offs. Now if those are proven true then the franchise has shown that they cannot be trusted to participate in the postseason within the rules and shouldn't be allowed to do so for X years.

Taking the franchise tag, while it would be effective in this instance given the Brees situation, IMO isn't a great precendent because not all teams will use the tag. Draft picks being taken is a given, but again I don't think that necessarily hurts a team greatly that are as well built as New Orleans (plus IIRC they are already quite close to the salary cap).

There is also talk that the IRS could get involved/be interested as there may be tax implications if the bounties were sufficiently large.

Personally I think the biggest question which needs to be asked or revealed is whether the money from the bounties came from the team, external sources or was it just players pooling the money themselves. I think that has the greatest impact on any punishment.
