Alternatively the English press could report what he actually said which was more like "unfortunately England slipped up in their group because Germany/England should be a semi-final game, not one for this stage" rather than twisting it.

But that wouldn't get the froth flowing.

On it's own "Dummerweise" does mean stupidly, but when "haben die Engländer" is added it translates as "unfortunately the English have...."

You certainly cannot expect the press over here to not put a slight twist on what Der Kaiser has said and not try to make it a bit of a dig at England.
