Adrian Chiles had been getting giddy over Barca all night, shame alot of the after match booty kissing had to go out the window. He doesn't know what to talk about now. I always get the impression he hates other English teams doing well and everytime Paddy Viera and Southgate mention how good Arsenal were he tries to put a downer on it and mention Barca

Arsenal's performance aside, Messi again showed why he is a cut above the rest. Exhilirating at times.

Re: Football Chat Thread : Wed Feb 16, 2011 10:00 pm
I might be alone in this but I thought Arsenal were largely terrible tonight. Only a ridiculous goalkeeping error from Valdes brought them back into it. Van Persie before that moment hadn't hit a ball properly all night. All his passes had been poorly weighted and he had sliced every shot well wide. He's one of those players who spends 80 minutes of a match wasting chance after chance then scores one and acts like he's the big dog.

Fabregas was another who misplaced just about every touch he had until the goals. Luckily for Arsenal Mr 40 goals already didn't bring his shooting boots. He's finished one on ones like that for fun all season yet he wasted two clear chances tonight. Taking Villa off was a poor choice from Guardiola. With him on the park Barca were very threatening, once he went off they only had to worry about Messi and they did that superbly. The Polish sounding lad at centre back for Arsenal was superb. He might be French however.

Arsenal have got to approach the away leg as if it's them that needs to score, not Barca. They need to get the first goal. If they don't I can't see them defending for 90 minutes in Barcelona. Despite what a few on here seem to be suggesting, Barca are genuinely in another league in terms of talent. Arsenal need to find another gear and well and truly take it to them if they are to win.

I thought Fabregas played well tonight as did Wilshere. Cesc always looks dangerous with the ball.

Usual passionate speech.

I thought taking off Villa to move Iniesta forward was daft. Iniesta hadn't been in the game at all, Barca weren't able to pass it amongst their midfield three, and he suffered most being the most advanced. Thought they should have hauled him off and brought on Keita to sure things up, then brought on Adriano for Pedro.

I think the most impressive aspect of Arsenal's performance has been their ability to push their physical boundaries. There was a point (just before Arshavin came on) where I thought Arsenal looked knackered, I thought Barca were gonna cruise but they somehow found another level. Still, the high defence worked for them tonight, they crowded Barca out but I seen too many chances missed by Barca tonight to think Arsenal could do it to the same effect at the Camp Nou.

Still, t'was a good game, bewildered as to how it was 1-0 for so long, Barca have that away goal though and they're guaranteed to score in the next leg. Great result for Shakhtar in Rome, Douglas Costa (remember him?) scoring a great goal apparently.

Fergie has been running the rule over Costa for the last two years according to the media.

If Fergie's watching him for Shakhtar, you should hope he sees Fernandinho when he's fit.

The BBC Live Ticker has the Messi offside goal as genuinely being an offside at the time. Then at half time they said the looked at it again and Messi was actually onside and Arsenal got a lucky break.

The BBC after-match report said that Messi was offside.

Was Messi actually offside or not?

I think he was onside. ITV wouldn't dwell on it long enough to gain clarity, much like they wouldn't debate the two handballs.
