I don't see this as a massive problem. McManaman made a mistake but he's not some Keane-esque player going round doing hatchet jobs on people. He mistimed it and the contact was pretty serious, but there was no way he meant it.
As I suspected at the time, there is actually nothing wrong with the player at all. Newcastle have done their best to get McManaman banned and failed. At the game they said he was too distressed to be seen by the medical staff. Then he flew back to Newcastle (Something they wouldn't have let him do if he really had a serious injury) because he was in too much pain to have the injury assessed in Wigan. Today he's got too much swelling to have the injury assessed, but they are optimistic that he's not actually got a career ending knock. He'll probably play next weekend.
More importantly, why are Newcastle FLYING back from Wigan? Does Wigan even have an airport, or were they flying from Manchester? By the time you've parked up, checked in, boarded and bagged and calmed poor Haidara down you would have been back already.
Don't be like that - If we never had incidents like this then Sky Sports News would have nothing to keep their tedious soap opera style reportings going.
Seriously, before Sky and all the TV cameras became such an intrusive part of the game, this incident wouldn't have received a hundreth of the attention that it has done - As I've argued on here, it was a complete accident which has happened thousands of times over the years, many of which have been a damn sight worse.
Unfortunately, in the modern era, with 24 hour news channels and internet forums, things get blown up massively out of proportion.....This one will soon be forgotten once the Newcastle player as his boots back on in a fortnight's time.
