Cardozo then, cool as you like. Could've rolled it in wearing his slippers. Why can't our lot take penalties like that.

Missed the first hour as I was at work. Five Live lot on my way home in the car were saying it had been the worst game of the tournament so far. Now, with some of the stinkers there have been, that is a very bold statement! :D

Brazil v Portugal was a lot worse as was England v Algeria. There's been worse games at the World Cup so far.

That's why I think the NFL way is the best way to introduce it. Give each manager a set amount of challenges, if they are right they keep them, if they are wrong and use it frivolously they lose one. That would allow contentious decisions to be looked at but should prevent requests for everything to be looked at.

In the NFL they are penalised for making an incorrect challenge in that they lose a time out, which has some value to a coach. Not sure what the equivalent would be in football, a substitution?

I think they should introduce technology but do it gradually and incrementally. Start with goal line decisions, sort out any teething problems (which there will be) then move onto to say offsides.

if they try to bring it in for everything at once it will be chaos. They need to think through all the different potential outcomes and how they will deal with them. Take offside. Clearly technology would have helped rule out Tevez's "goal" on sunday but what do you do when the situation is reversed? When a linesman flags when a player is 2 yards onside and the player sticks the ball in the net? Do you literally play to the whistle and ignore the linesman's flag, or only use the technology to rule out rather than rule in goals? It all needs to be thought through and they are unlikely to get it right first time.

They also need to think through how video technology will affect how the game is officiated. In cricket, test umpires hardly ever give stumpings or run outs these days. Unless the batsman is stranded half way down the pitch they pass the decision on to the video ref. They'd rather be criticised for not making a decision than making the wrong one.

Could the same happen in football, with linesmen simply keeping their flags down for tight offside decisions?

If VR technology was brought in then IMO they'd pretty much have to defer to the VR. It been scientifically proven that is it ultra difficult, close to impossible, to be able to accurately judge offside in some cases because you cannot be looking at the ball being played and the positions of the ball receiver and defenders at the moment the ball is played through.

20/20 Hindsight II: This Time It's Even Clearer
Easy to have a pop after the event, isn't it?

Terry Venables did that in The Sun, ripping Fabio Capello the proverbial new one after that hammering of which we will not speak.

'What a shambles. And while, like the rest of the nation, I was stunned by yesterday's defeat in Bloemfontein, I must admit I was not altogether surprised because, in my view, it had been coming for months. Or, to be more precise, since Wednesday March 3.
'That was the night we played Egypt at Wembley in the final friendly before Fabio Capello named his provisional World Cup squad. It was also the night I first began to have serious concerns about the Italian's tactics.

'We beat the Egyptians 3-1 but it was a far from convincing performance, particularly in the first half when a team who had failed to qualify for South Africa gave us the run-around on Wembley's wide open spaces.

'Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Gareth Barry were overrun in midfield. And as they chased shadows, our central defensive pairing of John Terry and Matthew Upson were left woefully exposed. That sounds familiar doesn't it? The writing was on the wall and remained so throughout our unimpressive build-up to the finals.'

Interesting. Presumably the writing was on Terry's wall in quite faint ink, because he didn't seem to have read it before giving his predictions for the tournament on June 7.

On who would win it: 'That's easy, England. Brazil and Spain might be favourites but I tip England to win every time. If we go into big tournaments believing we're not going to win then we won't. The whole nation has to be positive.'

On Capello's selection: 'Picking 23 players from the talent we have at our disposal is always a pig of a job. But Fabio looks to have selected the strongest squad he could have.'

On England's strengths: 'Our back four. I hoped they would all stay fit, but even now Rio Ferdinand is injured we have more than adequate cover in Upson, King, Carragher and co. We also have a world-class striker in Rooney.'

You could also have an in goal official in the same way that lots of other sports have it. It's not like football can't afford it especially for its more prestigious competition.

I don't know why you're still talking about it. Blatter has apologised to both Mexico and England so everything is sorted.

And his mother as well by the looks of it, he's had nothing from him all night

But then again Ronaldo has joined Rooney and Torres in looking like they'd struggle to get a game on Hackney marsh
