It probably helps with being an innocent, uncynical 11 year old at the time, but that World Cup was the greatest of all time by a long chalk.
Fantastic, flamboyant Brazil and France sides, some absolute belting games (Brazil-Italy, France-W.Germany, etc), a young Diego Maradona, the finest hat trick in the best football game of all time from Paolo Rossi, and Alan Hansen making a complete t!t of himself against the Soviets, which sent the Scots home ( ).....What more could a football fan want, it had everything.
What's baffling is that after the sterile rubbish that was the 2010 World Cup, Spain were hailed as the greatest side of all time??.... ......Absolute rubbish, they wouldn't have got out of the group stage in 1982.
Agree with a lot of that, Dita's (apart from the Spain bit, they are a v. good side)
I remember cycling home from school to watch THAT Brazil Italy game.....awesome The two long range efforts for Brazil Zico getting ALL the credit for Brazil, when Aidair(sp) was also brilliant.
86's WC was pretty good, too
90's was OK (some VERY over-hyped England performances...we were pretty awful, apart from the semi v West Germany)
ever since, every WC has been about as welcome as a re-heated sunday dinner......bl00dy awful
I forgot about Tardelli's goal in the final and his goal celebration as well
Grosso's in the 2006 semi-final against Germany had shades of Tardelli in it. Incindentally, i think that particular game is my favourite World Cup match of all time. Bear in mind i'm 26 and not as old as some of you lot
The 1st world cup I remember is mexico86.A lot of the games started too late for me to stay up and watch but I used to switch my tv on in my bedroom and listen for my parents coming up the stairs so i could switch it off and pretend to be asleep That world cup had some great games and probably the best world cup goal ever scored.

Yes, greatest game ever IMO.....The problem for Brazil was that they had the mentality that if the opposition scored 3, they would score 4, and it usually worked, except that in Italy, they came up against a top notch defensive unit and a top class centre forward.
It was a shame, because that Brazil team was so entertaining to watch and deserved to be remembered as winners, rather than gallant losers......They were the equivalent of the present day Spain side, except they actually had a cutting edge, rather than just playing pretty patterns for the sake of it....Also they were in an era when the opposition were allowed to tackle them and not be restricted to shadowing them while they played their passing game.
I remember nothing of '90. I remember being allowed to stay up and watch the final in '94, i was 9, only remember the Baggio skied penalty though. I remember finishing a school day and rushing home to catch what was left of the opening game of France '98, i'm sure i saw the opening goal.. (Junior Baiano? Brazil v Scotland), obviously the enduring memory is the England/Argentina game though. i'll always remember 2002 for South Korea's run to the Semi and Robbie Keane's equaliser against Germany, (i missed the England v Brazil game). 2006... Grosso, Germany v Italy. 2010..... erm... what happened in 2010? Something about vuvuzelas?

I'll see your Brazil Italy game, Dita's and I'll raise you, France Portugal Euro's 84 semi final 1-1 @ 90 mins...both goalies having a blinder Portugal take the lead with a few mins to go, in extra time France equalise with seconds to go, then...cue Motson..."Giresse, Tigana, Platini GOAL I've not seen a match like this in years".....still gets me every time...the word awesome is overused...not in this case
Before my time, but even I've seen the game where Caniggia got the sh*t kicked out of him by Cameroon. Class.
I've only been fortunate enough to actually watch four world cups (was only three for '94), my favourite was probably France '98, purely because it was my first taste of a proper tactically strong side. It was also the first time I witnessed a true superstar (R9). After that, 2006 was an absolutely outstanding that had all sorts. The game between Argentina and Mexico is probably my favourite game of all time, the Maxi volley is probably the greatest 'av a swing at it' ever scored.
Just watching the Everton v Stoke highlights. Lee Mason has put in the worst refereeing performance I've ever seen in my life. He cannot judge even a basic foul. So many today where the player beats the sliding defender to the ball and is brought down. Free kick? No.
Another thing he did really poorly on was fouls from set pieces. Stoke's masterplan from corners and free kicks was to bear hug the Everton player. Fellaini was fouled from pretty much every set piece, Vellios the same. There were two that were absolutely ridiculously blatant and were ignored. First was Fellaini where he was held so tightly by Shawcross that he could barely do anything from a great chance from a header. Appeals to the ref and almost gets booked. Another where Vellios has an easy chance to nod in the equaliser in the second half. He's got two arms around him and as he attempts to jump to nod it in the defender just keeps hold, ending up in a headlock. He then attempts to flick a foot at it and again the bald fool ignores it.
