Better then ever last time in Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winning it by 4 lengths, Deacon Blues, Bated Breath and Hoof It look the main dangers but they have to give her 5lbs which gives her a massive chance even if she doesn't improve beyond her current best of 122.
2000 Guineas - Bronterre @ 33/1 EW
Joint fav for the Dewhurst on Saturday with Power, last time out it wasn't well fancied before the race being sent off 11/4 which suggests it wasn't spot on and also ran abit free early on which makes its 5 length win even more impressive.
If it wins on Saturday the 33/1 will be long gone.
Strong Suit @ 6/4 in that field on Saturday will do me.
Taken 11/2 on Bapak Chinta in the Middle Park Stakes along with Bronterre @ 7/2 in the Dewhurst
Its won two races so far and the last at Royal Ascot was on soft which they didn't think it would perform best on and drifted to a big price before winning well.
Was well backed for the Nunthorpe until being ruled out injured, needs to improve to win this but has more scope then others.
While time will tell for the Guineas, Bronterre beat a useful, more streetwise rival last time quiet easily. Ran very green and looked like he was going to wander all over the shop a long way out, but was still tanking along while most of his rivals were starting to come off the bridle.
This isnt a tip, so dont all go rushing to back it. Its just good to see the trainer John Norton back at the track as I havnt seen him for ages. Ive met him a few times and had the pleasure of been shown round his small but super little yard many years ago. Always willing to have a chat when we saw him at the races too (we never thrust any moeny anywhere near him nor did we show we were interested in been an owner, so no need for him to go out of his way or anything). Trains in Barnsley so not too far away from where we were. And many years ago he put Eddie Callaghan (an apprentice we knew from Malcolm Jeffersons yard in Malton) on a bumper horse called Landler. An ex Sheikh Mohammed cast off who had been no good for that yard, they chucked him out in the grazing fields and Norton picked him up for 4k. He had shown promise at home but on his debut in a bumper he started the wrong way around and was 20 lengths down within an instance. So was basically giving a quiet racecourse experience gallop behind the field. Entered in a bumper at Doncaster next time out, Norton had two in the race. A 5/1 shot which looked good on paper after finishing 5th on debut and Landler a 33/1 poke tailed off on debut with no chance at all. Eddie on board, Norton told us at a gallop the Sunday before that Landler was much better than the other horse he had in the race and that he shouldnt really be out of the first 3 @ 33/1.
Working as a glass collector at the time (I was only 18 and just finishing my studies), I was earning around £20 a week and had driving lessons to pay for too, but I wasnt letting this one go unbacked. I told the Steward at the club where I worked and an oldish guy who I always spoke to on Friday nights at the club about the following days racing. Told them to keep it quiet and Moredashthancash which was another horse we knew well about from Merritia Jones yard would win earlier in the day so their bet on Landler would be a free one anyway. Next day was race day, had a fiver on Moredashthancash at 11/4 which trotted up, so that was my driving lesson paid for. I had about £12 left to my name till payday the following week. Wandered up to Corals where I lived where a guy who was one of those betting shop charachters that you always see was in. Nicest guy youd ever met, but was forvever on the tap to borrow money when Pat Eddery had a few losers as he backed him all the time. He also rode the horse home for you everytime it ran. Getting more and more excited as the race unfolded, arms folded his feet would go from side to side, he ended up with smoke from his feet he went that crazy. The only problem with him, my mate who introduced me to the Northern Racing circuit hated him. Had him down as his bad luck charm so told me never to tell him anything we knew about what was fancied. Well that day, I spoke to him queitly and said how much have you got left today, he said £2, which was meant to feed him and all that till 4 days later when his disabled benefit arrived. I said have a £1 each way on this in the last race today and if it loses, I'll refund the £2 so youve got something left. He looked and shouted out its got no chance, I said to him be quiet as I didnt want the shop knowing about it, but just to back it. He finally agreed to have £1 each way and I had a fiver each way at 33/1 opening show. So that was me for the week, if it lost Id have to pay Dancing Pete £2 back so he had some money for food and Id go home tail between the legs with the knowledge that at least the driving lesson was paid for.
Well it was one of those days you never forget, and obviously by the lenght of this story, I never will. Eddie rode the perfect race, always up there with the field and going well. Entering the final 2 furlongs he got serious as the horse began to move up the field and staying on. Camera angle changed with about a furlong to go as Eddie was almost neck and neck with the leader. It changed again with 500 yards to go with Landler a length in front and holding on well. Dancing Pete was going crazy and I mean crazy, I was going mad with him. The rest of the shop was in silence as just two of us cheered home the 33/1 outsider where the rest had backed the favourite or whatever. Dancing Pete was laughing his head off picking 40 odd quid. I picked up 200 and odd and it felt like Id hit the jackpot. Everyone in the shop wanted to know where Id got it from, simply told him that we were in the yard last week but I wasnt giving anything else away from the yard as didnt want the whole town on them all as you know as soon as a loser comes your way, its hell. Anyway I told Dancing Pete to keep it quiet, to look after his money and not to say a word to anyone, and I mean anyone about the winner in case my mate was around. He agreed, thanked me. I walked off home, he went back to have a little bit more than normal on Pat Edderys next mount wherever it was.
My old man had backed it so he was pleased when I got home and it was my mates 18th birthday too and he had a little bit on it too. So it was going to be a decent night out in Wakey. We called in at the local working mens club where we worked for a few cheap ones. The Steward who I had told the horse called me over and asked for a quiet word. I thought Id done something wrong working the previous night. He winked at me, said thanks (which wasnt something that came from his mouth very often), gave me £20 and said your drinks are free tonight in here aslong as you dont take the mick. I asked him how much he had on, but he wouldnt tell me, just said he had enough on with a mate of his. (Turned out he had Five Each way double and twenty on Moredash. So had an 11/4 and 33/1 double between him and his mate). Anyway, we got hammered, went into Wakey having a really good night and I got a call about 10pm from my racing mate, who to be fair wasnt one to mess around with, having been done for assault and all that. He went balistic on the phone to me, going mad that Id told Dancing Pete. I told him I hadnt, hes shouting back calling me a lier etc.. I said Id talk to him next day when I was back home. It turns out Dancing Pete had gone into a local boozer where normally he would have a pint of water for free as he had no money left. Not this night, he ordered a pint of cider and a vodka chaser. Landlord said "bloomin heck Pete, where you got the money from", to which he said "Richard gave me a 33/1 winner today". Unbeknown to him, my mate was stood about 5 yards to the left of Pete in the pub and got the full story. To make it worse, he had backed something else in the race as the jockey of Moredashthancash had told him to back a different one in the bumper as theirs was fancied too. So not only had he not backed the 33/1 winner, but his most hated bad luck charm had backed it because I told him to. It cost me about half my winnings and a lot of grovelling the next few weeks just to keep my mate quiet and to save me from a good kicking in all fairness.
The sad end to the tale was the oldish guy who I also told in the WMC where I worked, had also backed it. He gave me £20 too and said that he had won enough to take him and his wife on holiday and they had booked a last minute deal to go away for their anniversary (they were both retired) thanks to the tips from the glass collector. Apparently they had a really good time, and he was always ever so thankfull of what I did for him, wanting to buy me beers without the steward knowing when I was working, keeping a pint under the table for me and all that. He had a heart attack a few months later and passed away. Sad end, but in some way, I was happy that I had helped him enjoy his last few months.
Dancing Pete never got anymore info from me, although he did back Landler when it went novice hurdling, but it never reached the days of the 33/1 gamble. It wasnt worth the risk anymore telling him.
Anyway, after all that. So John Norton always will be held in high regard from me. He doesnt have many runners and Ive not seen his name for ages, but its there tomorrow, in the last race at Carlisle. So I'll be having a few quid each way just in case he has something similar planned, safe in the knowledge that he owes me nothing and I passed my driving test a few weeks later too !

Just looked at both those races, what a wonderful story. Need more like this on here . Anyway, the horse in the bumper that has same trainer as earlier winner refused to race according to the RP. That, coupled with missing out on the gamble, was probably why your mate was so beside himself.

Looking back, I think that was right, they had punted it, and it just stood there at the start and they did their money in. And then to make matters worse, Landler popped up at 33/1. He was livid, and like I said, I did well to survive a kicking !!
Oh the stories I could tell of coups that came off and well planned gambles that were foiled. I reckon I could write a book to be honest. I went racing for about 4-5 years, nearly every Saturday. From the time we went to Newbury to buy a horse and found out that Graham Bradley had already hired a posh restaurant out in celebration of Suny Bay winning the big one that day. It duly did at 5/2 and we hammered it. All the way to driving a jockey 320 miles or so to Towcester, setting off at 6am, in the knowledge that his only ride of the day in the bumper was the best one in the yard and was forecast at 20/1. We got there just before the first race, he went to see the trainer to see how things were, only to be told that it had been pulled out and was a non runner. Ended up staying there and lost everything I had for the bumper horse on the rest of the races instead.

Nice one.
I'll regale you with some of mine one rainy day when I'm in typing mode.
Can't not give this Group 1 winner a chance in a weak race like this, its two runs last year of 121 are well clear of these.
"I think he was just very ring-rusty at Newbury, not having run since March, and he does need the blinkers now," he said. "The ground was a little dead, too, and it'll be fast tomorrow. He certainly seems in great form at home."
That's a good few poor runs on the bounce now. Either they are completely f*cking about with it and just using these as glorified racecourse gallops before going Stateside or it doesn't want to race anymore.
May have a bet tomorrow, haven't backed nothing since Principal Role last weekend.
