Whilst waiting to be served, I got talking to an Arfur Daley character. Mohair coat, hat to match and smart brogues. " What do you fancy in the next?" he asked. " The Thinker, can't get away from it." I replied. " same here, he's the only reason I'm here." said Arfur. He bought me a pint, we exchanged pleasantries, then separatly went down to the ring. Best price was 5/6, that'll do, £10 ready. Arfur was in front of me, putting his bet on. My arsce fell out,he pulled out 2 handfulls of notes. "£12k The Thinker". Fugg me, he knows something, get the " emergency money" on it! " £40 win The Thinker." Heart was going 10 to the dozen, I was p1ss wet thru, cold and shaking with nerves. Needed a pint and brandy, so headed back to the bar to watch the race inside.
I must have jumped every fence, hit the horse a dozen times, and rode out the finish. PHOTO. poop, don't need this, body and nerves are already shot at. Arfur came over, and we watched the replays over and over. " what do you think?" he asked. " Think the other horse has got it." I replied....and it had. £40 down the swannee. Gutted and totally p1ssed off, a) horse beaten, b) 2 of my nemesis Charlie Brooks and Peter Scudamore had fiddled the winner. BAIES at 20/1ims. Arfur turned around and said," win some, lose some." and walked off. £12k in cold blood, and he did'nt care. I did, and put the losing slip with the others in my back pocket.
Just heard Richard Hughes has handed his licence in after been given a 10 day ban after a ride at Kempton tonight for hitting the horse too many times in the final furlong.
The horse was 6/5 favourite and obviously he knew my money was down (although not a lot) and wanted to get it up for me, so fair play I say, even if he did finish second.
Wonder what the BHB will respond with, not sure if Hughes will forfeit his mounts on Saturday or if the ban takes instant effect anyway ?
The last 2 races were a blur, I could'nt wait to get home, I knew what was coming. And I was right, both of my horses finished 2nd. 6 fugging 2nds out of 6.6 fugging losing betting slips in the back pocket. I was dying, freezing, it was now snowing and I had a 1 hour walk to the bus stop, wherever that was. Eventually, I got home and went to bed. Only a matter of time before rigor mortis set in.
Awoke the following morning. Flu had kicked in, hot, cold, shaking, aching, feeling sorry for myself, and those t0ssers Brooks and Scudamore had fiddled me!! Then EUREKA, in a flashback, my 6 2nds were in my placepot! Forgot about dying and raced downstairs to see how much the placepot had paid. £422...Im rich, now wheres my jeans with my losing betting slips. Emptied the jeans, keys, snotty hanky and about 30p in change. NO BETTING SLIPS! Then for the stomach churning flashback. whilst waiting for the bus home, I'd emptied my pockets of betting slips, sporting life and racecard into a bin. what should have been a £270 day profit, turned into a £570 loss. Bed was needed, preferbly with arsenic, could life get worse? It did, mum walked into my bedroom with a letter. It was a job reply. I'd got some cack job that I did'nt want, was starting the monday before Xmas and was expected to work over Xmas. A visit to the doctor was needed. forget bad-back, this was serious. Flu and depression.
Doctor gave me a sicknote upto the 2nd week in January. Sicknote was handed into work before I'd even started the job! Needless to say, that I was sacked before I stepped foot in the place, but at least, I got a few weeks sickpay off them.
I never ever did back anything of Scudamore or Brooks after Haydock, though I did feel sorry for Scu when he fell and broke his leg riding a horse appropriately named Black Humour.
France +26 (@ Evs) vs England Knights (Stan James) France (@ 12/1) vs England Knights (Victor Chandler)
Why are an inexperienced England junior side such big favourites against an experienced France side with a very good pack, If the France line up named can't beat this side then serious questions need to be asked.

Unbelievable news mate, still shocked by it now. He's taken one hell of a stance against the new rules by quitting. He was furious after his ban on Monday so tonight was obviously a step too far, although he has broken the new rules his bans did seem extremely harsh. He must be on about 25 days now including the Breeders Cup meeting. I agreed with his sentiments tonight that he feels he can't give 100% under these rules and if he can't do that he doesn't feel he can continue.
I'm not sure his ban means all that much now he's handed his licence in, he's quit tonight so he'll obviously not be riding on Saturday. He said he won't ride until the rules are reviewed.
See what your money on his horse has done, that added pressure obviously too much

A jockey should never be allowed to hit a horse with a whip to make it go faster. Animal cruelty plain and simple.
