It looked a lot worse in slow motion. In real time it was split seconds apart. I don't think Essien tried to do him, just tried to block the ball but Rooney just got there. Probably deserved a yellow, but wasn't as bad as some like to make out.

If someone's asked him the question, why is he not entitled to an opinion?

What makes the opinion of someone who has been involved in sport at the very highest level any less worthy than some nobody on an internet forum, for example?

If he hadn't been involved in rugby union (a sport football could learn a shedload from about how to treat its players and officials), I'm guessing you wouldn't have been half as chippy.

Beacuse he is a 57 year old man using the phrase 'un-cool'. For that alone he wants stringing up.

Got to give Townsend credit though. Stole a living as a 'footballer' and now doing the same as a 'pundit'. If you can get away with it...
