BETFAIR CHASE;
Nacarat...33/1
Weird Al....7/1
Kauto Star...place lay at 2/1- 5/2...on the day.
Firstly, I expect Long Run to win, but playing odds on is not for me, so at the prices, these are my bets. Can't see Time For Rupert trying to employ front running tactics again, which would leave Nacarat as the only grade 1 front runner in the field. Would have been each way if 8 had stood their ground, but still worth a dabble at the prices. Quite simply he has to dictate or be close up with the pace, if not, he sulks. Should come on for his Wetherby run, but a nagging doubt says a course with a short run-in suits him best. Whereas, Weird Al has more in his favour, namely, a course with a long run-in and a small field. Pace should be fast enough to enable Timmy Murphy to swithch him off and plod around the back for 2m.
Now for the main bet. Place laying Kauto Star. Quite simply, he should have been retired last season. It's a shame and embarressing for any passed-it athlete to be still competing at the highest level, when it's blatently obvious that they are not upto that standard. His run in last years Cheltenham Gold Cup was disappointing, his next at Punchestown was horrendous. Has frequently made jumping mistakes throughout his career, and getting older and slower, these will only get worse. He is now 11, it will be his 29th chase run and 7th year of chasing. To emphasise the importance of age in grade 1 races, since Desert Orchid in 1990, I could only find 3 other grade 1 chase winners in this country. Edredon Bleu 2003 King George, Katabatic ( got a soft lead in heavy ground Melling Chase 1994, and Moscow Flyer 2005 Melling Chase. He has age stats, number of runs, and some very decent opposition against him, to make him a place lay.
I would not be surprised to se him fall or be pulled up, and promptly retired.
Master Minded also looks lay material at Ascot.
