Re: Football Chat Thread : Thu Apr 28, 2011 6:26 pm
Given the speed of play around the incident I don't think Pepe can have any complaints about the sending off because it wasn't that far removed from the Scholes semi-final one. Admittedly it wasn't the same but he had studs showing one footed in a match which was very physical with lots of (as flipper said) snide challenges going around so it stands to reason that what Pepe did was running the risk. Pepe chose to run the risk and he can have few complaints because in the context of the game I think most other referees would have made the same decision given what I've just referred to.

That's like saying a shot that goes screaming into the top corner isn't that far removed from one that hits the woodwork.

Pepe played the ball. He won the challenge. Scholes made no contact with the ball whatsoever, went past the ball and went into the Citeh players thigh.

Did you watch the game live? Was your instant reaction that it was a red? It wasn't mine, and a red card wasn't mentioned by the commentators until it was produced.

Just watched the Porto v Villareal game, that Falcao seems a decent player, notched 4 tonight, including 2 cracking headers

Agree entirely.....The red card was the action of a ref who had completely lost control of the match and was simply trying to rein it back before it went completely haywire.

If referee's actually had the balls to clamp down on play-acting, then much of what happened in the second half would not have happened.....Both sides set out to get players dismissed or suspended for the return leg and it led to much of the bitterness that tainted the game.....The players seemed to spend most of the game accusing each other of cheating!!

Regarding Real, at least Ramos won't be able to drop this one under the team bus....

Aye, 100% Wire, the rumours are Falcao and Hulk from Porto could be on their way to their way to the Premier League next season.

Porto's manager, Andre Villas-Boas, is surely set for a top job. No disrespect to Porto but I imagine he will be wanted by a few clubs with more spending power, would be perfect for Arsenal when Wenger stands down as I can't imagine he will want daft money and will be used spending wisely as Porto usually sell and buy in unison. Very highly rated by all in Portugal like José was at the start of his career. They've got the league stitched up and the Europa League is theirs to lose if they can keep their form up. He's only 33 and has won something like 45 out of 52 games in charge.

Jose Mourinho is a results only boss, if he doesn't get the results, he isn't living up to his 'great' billing, as his sides certainly don't play great football.

I think too many people are making the decision out to be far too clear-cut. At match speed, my instinctive reaction (and I said it to my mate straight away) was 'red card', immediately followed by 'but it shouldn't have been, it was one of those silly 50/50's where one player swings at it, whilst the other tries to nick it, yet the one nicking it always seems to get the card'. After the minute or so it took for the card to come out, I was still in disbelief, but after re-watching it at match speed, I felt the ref's decision was completely justified when viewed at that speed. The way it looked, it looked like there was no clear winner, with one player trying to play the ball, the other going studs up over it.

After watching a few replays, more doubt begins to kick in and I'm still half stuck on the fence over it, but I don't think the ref made the decision because he was losing control, I felt the decision was brave and instinctive, something rarely seen in big games, where refs are encouraged to not spoil the game. The game would always be impossible to control, the shameless encouragement of spoiling tactics from both sides would always deny fairness and control, but I don't think many refs could have handled that game better. If anything, he should have sent Mourinho well away, and probably could have sent Adebayor off for a raised hand to the face, which is auto-red these days.

Thing is, what are refs supposed to do to clamp down? Is it time wasting when a player feigns injury? How does a referee know when a player is feigning injury? Of course there are clear-cut examples, but it's like diving, things happen at such speed and the refs making their views from a good distance away, it's almost impossible to always call it correctly. IMO, one way to stop people feigning injury would be to stop the clock, some people don't see the need, but it would save a lot of time, which solves half of the problem. The other would obviously be a post-match video review systems, but getting the correct formula and consistency, as well as monitoring the sheer amount being reviewed, will definitely be a challenge.
