If he gets into double figures I can see Arsenal or Spurs putting a £15m bid in. That will then prompt Kenny to come in with a last minute offer of around £30million.

Maybe at school boy level. Are you telling me professional footballers, coached most days in the week, need direction when it comes to the match? Most of the time, direction comes from the sideline. The role of captain these days, IMO, is mostly a media thing and for approaching referees (allegedly). On the field, they do very little. If a team has players that need to look to somebody else for motivation, inspiration or direction, they should really consider selling those players.

A better example would have been the '06 FA cup final, where Gerrard's influence was far greater. However, I still don't think the role of captain is anywhere near the importance it's being made out to be. It may as well be given to the team's best player as he'll be the one doing the great things that everybody should follow. In terms of leading a team, directing a team, inspiring a team, motivating a team and setting a good example, most players should do this on their own, with the manager doing the rest.

If we're talking about players leading teams, setting the right example and swinging games for his team, why has Terry ever been Chelsea's captain?

I think England is a slightly different animal as you're talking about potentially (hopefully) a team being away together 24/7 for a month, hopes of a nation blah blah, if you did well handling the pressure and whatnot. I think whoever leads England would have a larger remit in the camp of keeping players happy, all the usual issues homesickness, worry, boredness, tiredness etc etc as it's not Capello's strength to do that.

Gerrard's England at WC2010 didn't handle any of that well, once they got onto the pitch it showed. Hopefully the FA will make the captains role at EU2012 by having a better base, less downtime etc, but I'm sure it's still a task.

The thing about all this that always makes me smile is how much of a complete tool Ashley Cole must be, 100 cap left back. He should be an England legend who you would think must be captain material, up there with the best in the world in his position etc yet he's never even mentioned. Fans hate him for starters like.

I was going to include the FA Cup final, but IMO it was more shameful that you actually needed Gerrard rescuing you against West Ham, so I left it out.

John Terry is an awesome captain. I think his stint as CFC captain is pretty much as good as you can get.

One of your big things is the fact that Benitez was hammered, and hampered, by the media. I think JT's treatment has been 10 times worse than anything Benitez got. The papers have gone out of their way to set up JT and members of his family. I dread to think what you scousers would have done if one of your players had been stitched up like JT has over his career.

Teams rarely work without great managers. Liverpool's 2005 win was more down to Benitez than Gerrard IMO. Define; leader. If you use our '05 final as an example, who was our leader? Dudek for keeping us in it with last gasp saves? Carragher for some desperate defending? Hamann for coming on and using his experience in a time when we were being battered by our superiors? Gerrard for scoring and winning a penalty? If you look at the best teams, they often have a team of players with similar personalities, look at Barcelona, who's the leader there? Xavi? Messi? Puyol? Pique? Valdes? Iniesta? Villa? Busquets? Alves?

I don't think teams need a single 'leader', all players should be expected to lead by example. If you end up only having one leader, or a couple of leaders, you run the risk of imbalance in the side and some players having far too much influence than is actually required. If you look at Liverpool's team under Benitez, according to 'hidden knowledge', Gerrard and Carragher had far too much influence over the dressing room and the club. We need their leadership, but I'd rather my players not be influenced by others because they know their own example to set and they motivate themselves. For me, the role of captain should be given to either the perceived best player or the highest paid player, just to massage their ego. IMO, they do very little on the pitch that is believed a captain does, but hey, that's just me.

Come on LGJM, Terry may command respect at Stamford Bridge, but as a person he (and his family) are just below sewer rats.

We all know Terry's (and his family members) misdemenours, so I'd love to know how he's been set up for them by the media

Lets see now,

shagging his best mate's girlfriend......nice
pimping out his Wembley box...against the rules
father caught drug pushing
mother caught shop lifting
brother caught shagging team-mates wife, which results in suicide

yeah, regular paragons of virtue, the Terry family...all victims of set-ups/circumstance

1. I don't think Terry and Bridge were best mates.
2. She was his ex girlfriend. He was living in the north west, she was down south.
3. She'd supposedly slept with half the Chelsea team, a couple of them before she was with Bridge.

The reason I think Terry was set up over that. The story didn't come from her, the story didn't come from Terry, so where did the papers get it? They deliberately went after it.

I could care less about the Wembley box and his tour of the CFC training ground. If some mug wants to give him £10k for a walk round the training ground then more fool them. Again though, it was a newspaper set up.

His dad wasn't pushing drugs. A journo befriended him in a pub, asked him if he knew where he could score some drugs, he got a phone number of a dealer for him. Again, a newspaper set up.

His mother. I assume this was just a simple reaction to her getting arrested. Can't say the story every interested me enough to bother reading it.

The condemnation that Terry and Cole have received for their misdemeanour's is massively OTT compared to the condemnation a certain Welsh Man Utd player received for screwing his brother's wife.

ONE-EYEDNESS IN THE EXTREME

The Terry clan are Jeremy Kyle's wet dreams rolled into one

Newspaper set-ups my ar5e
I suppose if the journo wanted 5lbs of easy-peeling potatoes, JT's daddy would have been just as forthcoming. HE GOT CAUGHT.

Take off your Chelsea glasses, and see the Terry family for what they are......scumbags, with the morals off alleycats....oh, and then there's the racism

One aside you do mention though, re a certain Welsh footballer, I'm sure if his club side was any other, he's have got CONSTANT abuse, DAILY......BUT, with his manager's penchant for baning ANY journalist from press conferences who dare ask probing questions, there are editors who have been told to "cut Giggs some slack"
