And if he'd done that you'd just say that he'd undermined the new manager by focusing on the negative when he was just starting.
If you were Alan Shearer, would you have wanted Ashley to be giving the "this is what relegation will cost to you and this club" speech at the beginning of your tenure? I sure as hell wouldn't. I'd expect to be given the time to sort the situation out by myself. Shearer has had that time, it hasn't worked, so now Ashley is letting the players know just how crucial it is that they keep the club up.
Ashley has clearly screwed up a lot. But that doesn't mean he should get blamed for anything and everything.
