On the topic of crowds, I have seen some very worrying attendances over the first few weeks of the Union season (worrying for them) - it looks like Sale, Newcastle, Leeds, Saracens etc are in for a tough season

The Saracens crowd looked weirdly low, absolute mystery. I think Cj and Catalancs picked up on Newcastle and I also noted Gloucester's drop in attendances.

I doubt that any will get into financial difficulties, but the RFU might think again about its expansionism.

The line 'the collaborationist Vichy government' is possibly the best indication of who was responsible for the demise of Rugby League in France.

Breaking News.

I think banning Rugby League is quite far down on the current british governments 'to do' list... probably a few places below 'sort the economy out'

:D

Barry what you have to realise myself and Urmston Wire have obviously had bad experinces where union is concerned.
And also like Dunbar has said there is a lot of history between RL and union(most of it bad) dating right back to 1895 to the present day.

For me RL is the best sport in the world and always will be but when I get abuse on this site from fellow RL fans and union fans for having a go at union they jump on my back and call me bigoted and once I was called a bell end(which in laughed at BTW) and yet they don't understand what I went through at the time.

In fact in 2002, the French Government found it was rugby union.

He is a union apologist or at best an ARLT.

Waste of time.

:D

It's a pretty sad admission but I know quite a lot about the Vichy regime and this is the story as far as my research has shown.

Vichy banned all professional sport as 'corrupting'. However, only one sport was banned outright, and that was rugby league.

Now, Marshal Petain was not a huge fan of sport anyway, so he wasn't particularly bothered, nor was the real power behind the throne, Pierre Laval.

However, the leading collaborationist writer, Robert Braisillach, was a big RU fan and hated RL with a passion. He and his colleagues at the French RU lobbied Petain and Laval to ban RL and turn over its assets to union. The name 'rugby league' remained banned even after the game was re-legalised by De Gaulle, and the name remained banned until 1991.

So yes, RU actively tried to destroy RL before. Not under Nazi pressure or Petain's pressure.

I dont wish to trivialise whatever it was you went through with Rugby Union.. but I'm genuinely interested as to what it might have been that scarred you for life. Tell me.. I promise not to call you a 'Bell End' :D

If its really embarrassing (or of a sexual nature) feel free to pm me or drop me an email at the address below in total confidence.
