Who would you play down the flanks? Malouda on the left, who on the right though? Lamps and Essien in the middle obviously?

Sort of, but you don't get a guaranteed goalscorer if you go abroad, whilst there aren't too many players like Carroll available abroad. I can sort of understand their fees, it's the typical English premium, but if you compare them on pure ability and not nationality, you just have to look at how much Citeh paid for Dzeko, who is much better than both of them.

Don't think either of them would cost what liverpool are reportedly offering for Carroll. Doubt very much either would go to clubs like liverpool or Spurs anyway with rumours of summer transfers to Milan and Madrid respectively.
