Was a solid player in France where he was the main man of a pretty average side. I remember when we played Toulouse in a CL qualifier, all the pre-match talk was about Elmander but he looked pretty poor, I'd seen him play a few times and he looked kinda like a Santa Cruz type of player when I seen him, he was strong, held the ball up well and was good at bringing others into play, but in his time here he's done none of that. I remember seeing him for Sweden at the Euro's and they used him as a right winger, he never really stood out, he tried and was a willing runner, but he never stood out in a pretty average side. Was extremely surprised when Bolton signed him, he wasn't exactly young and he wasn't exactly proven, for that kind of money, you'd be looking for a prospect who'd come in, offer you a few years of top service then be sold on at a hefty profit. It was a very strange signing IMO.
He reminds me a lot of Kuyt. Bought for a lot of money to score goals, doesn't get the volume of goals that a frontman should but has a lot of qualities that managers like so he always finds himself in the starting XI because of his workrate, versatility, team ethic etc. He's just not a natural goalscorer is he ?
I actually think one of the best strikers in the Premiership this year who's gone under the radar, and I'd expect a really big season from next year is Kalinic at Blackburn. In a better side he'd be exceptional. Scores lots of different goals, always seems to hit the target, I like him alot.
