Just had a quick search for the rafa article that Penguin, Flipper and the British media are wanking themselves over. It was an interview with Tomás Guasch on 15/02/2009.
Now then, our responsibloe and truthful media have "translated said artcle and this is what they said.
"In my five years, I've paid less in transfer fees than I've received, even though I spent £40m on Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane. It's as simple as that."
the highlighted bit is what all the story is based on.
"Yo, en los cinco años que llevo, gasté menos de 40 en Torres y Keane. ¡Como para andar discutiendo entre nosotros!"
That translates to using Google translate as
"I, in the five years that I take, I spent less than 40 in Torres and Keane. Like walking discussing between us!"
other translations on the same quote are
"I, in five years that I take, spent less than 40 in Torrew and Keane. Like for gait discussing between us!"
"I, in the five years that I take, I spent less than 40 in Torres and Keane. Like walking discussing between us!"
But, then we come to Babelfish, which gives us
"I, in the five years that I less than take, I spent 40 in Torres and Keane. Like walking discussing between us!"
Of course, the wonderful and insightful British media will use the last translation, because they can change "I, in the five years that I less than take" and turn it into "In my five years, I've paid less in transfer fees than I've received"
The fact that he never said or meant what he has reported to have said, has nothing to do with it, and the usual "linky" muppets lap it up.
Pity they don't teach common sense at Uni.
Remember kids, not everything you read in the papers is true. FACT.
just off for a w&nk.
I actually agree with you, a broadcast journo i know has a mate who works for a red top i best not name - he say's they take a view on stories where the spin / line may not actually be true, and evaluate what at worst they might lose if successfully sued - and have a fighting fund to fund legal case if it happens, often they will run something the know to be not true.
Sensible reporting is by and large dead, websites, papers, tv stations, magazines want viewers / listeners - they need as strong a headline / covershot as possible.
When i used to work for emap as was, who was on the front of FHM could make a difference in sales of literally hundreds of thousand of copies (when it was at the peak of it powers), that obviously equates to huge money in terms of copies bought, pushes it further up the ABC figures and drives up how much they can ask for in terms of advertising revenue.
Doesn't mean it's all lies either though..

A lot of teams beat us, do a lap of honour and don't stop running. They live too long on one good result. I remember Jimmy Adamson crowing after Burnley had beaten us once and that his players were in a different league. At the end of the season they were.

Why, if it isn't Catalancs, RLFANS answer to a question no-one asked!
Does that mean that Rick Parry is going to get fooked off then?
Not sure, I've read that he will leave to take up a position in the F.A, and I've also read that he'll stay, but handle the commercial side of things.
Who knows? Only time will tell, I guess, I'm not fully certain of what Parry's role is, but from the things I've read on him, his reign at the club has been a failure.
