There was a spell of about 3-4 years where 'tribute' shows (i.e. phoney rip-offs which broke a whole lot of copyright laws!
) were big business in this country. At a time when it was impossible to get tickets for either of the two WWF UK PPV's a year (no UK house show tours during the Attitude Era really), I went to a couple of the trib shows, for a laugh as much as anything.
The wrestling (if you can call it that) was terrible, the impersonators lame (e.g. someone saw one with a Rey Mysterio tribute but he could hardly do any highflying moves!
), and often involved false advertising e.g. having the real Kane on posters.
Thankfully these con artists seem to have died a death now. Would rather watch two talented young Brit wrestlers put on a great match then two t**s dressed up bumbling about!
I must admit, I went to two of these tribute shows as a kid. I think the two words I find suitable to sum it are 'Rock Steadfast' (for those that didn't go, Google him, I imagine he'll be somewhere on the internet, available for bookings and the like as a Dwayne Johnson tribute/impersonater).
I also had the misfortune of coming across the Legend of Doom.
Who was the Davey Boy Smith rip off? Was it Boston Blacksmith or something?
