Take a free kick in that position and you are aiming to hit it above or around the wall. Baines was probably trying to do that, fluffed his shot, but was rescued because the defenders fluffed their jobs too.

Not at all he meant that. If you listened to the Man of the Match interview, he admitted he thought it was too far out for him and that he was trying to get someone else to take it for him. When they all refused he said he just put his foot through it.

Superb strike, the reverse swing of football free kicks. If Ronaldo or Roberto Carlos do that we praise it to the hilt, why not Baines?

Is there a better left back in the world than Baines? He's been England's best for years now and getting better and better.

While I'm on about quality players how good is Sylvain Distin? Superb again tonight.

If Ronaldo or Carlos do that, and the wall does that, I'm still going to say the wall screwed up and didn't do their job.

"He meant it." He meant it??? He admits that all he did was hit it as hard as he could. That's what he meant to do. That's what he did. Sure, he struck the ball beautifully but nine times out of ten the ball would have hit the wall and people would have just said what a poor free kick.
