Sebastian Larsson is a good signing for them, I think he'll go well. They've never scored enough goals for me from midfield Sunderland, always reliant on the front players. Both he & Gardner will chip in with goals and also you get set piece delivery from Larsson.
I think they'll have a slightly better season, maybe finish 9th. I know they've signed Wickham, and they have Gyan but they no longer have a prolific striker.
