Personally i think winners should always be rewarded, under the system that Bernie Ecclestone is proposing you will get the driver with the most wins over the season winning the world title which i think is the right way, quite a few drivers including Lewis Hamilton would not have won world titles under the proposed new scoring system.

For me it will make for a better spectacle as F1 has become a bit of a procession over the years and to quite a few people it will come across as boring under its present format, you need to get rid of tactical driving where a driver will sometimes settle for 2nd or 3rd as he knows its no great damage to his title aspirations as he has more races later in the year to correct things instead of pushing on and going all out for the win.

In an ideal world you would like to see all the drivers race in the different teams cars to find the true racing champion as that would be my idea of a fairer format rather than the best machinery coming out on top the majority of the time.

I like the idea of the new system, it should encourage more positive driving, the only problem is that if one driver, or team, dominates then the WDC race then the last few races could become meaningless - though maybe the constructors championship might become more important then?

Funny how F1 works, isn't it.

Ferrari built themselves a car that was fast, but not as reliable as usual in 2008. As a result one of their drivers lost out on the title despite winning more races than anyone else that season.

Now, all of a sudden and as if by magic, Bernie the Pixie decides he wants to change the rules to reward teams who are quick but not necessarily reliable (like Ferrari).

Surely he can't be that desperate for some liquidity to settle his divorce that he's resorted to receiving brown envelopes from the Maranello boys?

If this system comes in within two years you'll have an F1 starting grid with about 10 cars on it. What's the point of the likes of Honda, Force India and Williams staying in the sport if only the top 3 (mainly McLaren, Ferrari and the occasional interloper from Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Renault or BMW) get any reward for where they finish in the race?

I like the idea, instead of the smaller teams being happy with a point or two they will have to keep trying to pass people to finish higher and for the top teams it will stop drivers just being happy to finish 1 place behind their rivals.

Lets have more passing and confrontations on the track, they're what gets people exited about motor sport not the whole field just driving round the track in a line for two hours on a sunday.

Reward wins more but teams want to keep the points system down to 8th place. What to do?
Simple - increase the difference in points between the finishing positions

For example -

1st 15 points
2nd 10
3rd 7
4th 5
5th 4
6th 3
7th 2
8th 1

I think it's a ridiculous idea. The whole point of a SEASON is to see who is the most consistent. Although most unlikely, what if a driver finishes every race in 2nd place and all the Grand prix victories are spread over 10 or 12 other drivers. The driver who finishes 2nd every week will probably have far more points than the other drivers who maybe have 1 or 2 victories each and the more consistent driver wins nothing :? :?

I agree that drivers should be attempting to win the race rather than being happy with taking 2 points less and staying in 2nd etc. Surely this can be achieved by just making the reward for winning the race much greater than finishing 2nd.

After seeing some of the steward decisions it does make you wonder.
