The day saw all the schools that have been victorious in the various cluster competitions throughout the year invited back to find the overall ‘Champions’ and as in previous years the quality of the Rugby skills on display was extremely high ,as the teams got a final chance to put into practice the skills learnt in the Cougar Coaching sessions ,delivered by Development Officers Sam Obst and Jeremy Crowther.
Oaks finally triumphed in a tough three way battle for the boys title , with Hothfield Street and Lees Primary , after three closely fought games .
A fantastic all around team performance from St Josephs girls saw them defeat a game Haworth Primary side , who despite a gigantic effort could not match the pace and evasion skills of their opponents .
Cougars Development Officer Sam Obst commented ‘ Yet again we’ve seen a great afternoons competition, that has demonstrated what potentially great rugby league talent we have in the local area . We’ve worked closely with the Oakbank Schools Sports Partnership throughout the year and the help of Steve Bell from the Partnership in the organisation of today’s event has been invaluable. Also big thanks to the Staff from Cougar Park who opened up and manned the club facilities for the afternoon.’
Sam continued ‘Big thanks again must go to all the schools for supporting the tag coaching this year and we are looking forward to seeing some of them again in the next few weeks when begin delivering a short coaching programme , teaching basics of full contact RL , for the Tackle Tournament’ that traditionally finishes off the Primary Programme in late June.
We are committed to delivering rugby league and all the health and social benefits that participating in sport can bring, to more local young people both in school and the community in the next year and if any businesses or individuals feel they can help us to deliver that commitment, either with resources or financially, contact either myself or Jason at the Club, we’d love to hear from you’.
