Hi all, first post on here but been a cougars fan for around 20years.
I think there were a lot of positives to come from yesterday’s game of which in my opinion could have gone either way. Given the conditions it was always going to be a tight scrappy affair for both sides with very little possibility of flowing rugby.
Keighley did not take real advantage of playing down hill first half, but did pressure the opposition on quite a few occasions only to lack the cutting edge of a little grubber kick through. The only real break I recall Whitehaven having for the full game was that where they scored there second try. Compared to the performance at Batley this must be encouraging that breaks of our defensive line were few and far between.
I do agree Richie Barnett had a dismal first half but luckily for us, most of his handling errors were down in there half so didn’t come to much despite the loss of possession. Very poor ability for a winger at championship level. He just seems to lack any motivation & appears to just make the numbers up.
Second half I felt we worked well to get back into the game & if not for a little more patience rather than kicking the ball away, then we could have snuck a win. At first glance & I haven’t seen a replay yet but I felt that Whitehaven’s 3rd try was kicked out by a cougars player before there was any form of grounding but someone may know different.
Duffy had a good break on the left of which was well intercepted by a Whitehaven player, and I thought we were going to sneak a try down the left in the dying minutes if not for a little greediness but all in all I felt there were many positives to take from the performance.
Only things I felt we lacked were a playmaker/positional kicker & a winger to replace Barnett but encouraged compared to the Batley game. Once the dryer periods come then we may see some of the flowing rugby that March has mentioned.
