Is it a selection poser for you? : Thu Feb 02, 2012 6:47 pm
I see in this weeks Keighley News that JD says, he is facing a selection poser.
This is caused by the fact that Jy-mel Coleman is playing so well.

I dont think its a poser at all.

Coleman should be in the team alongside Obst.

Ill put the Cat amonst the pigeons here

Drop Feather

Play Jones and Coleman at halfback

Obst at 9

That will speed up us no end and I think Jones and Coleman would be a good combo

Jones has to given time to get going, He was simply our best player 2 seasons ago, I remember the Sheffield game on telly he was a class act and it was only a few months ago he was playing against the likes of Benji Marshall and Darren Lockyer

Instead of aiming cheap shots at other posters why don't you suggest a better way?

I'd go.

Haythornthwaite (best player in pre season so far)
Duffy
Parata
Tadulala
Barnett
Obst
Jones
Cherryholme
Feather
Shickell
Sheriffe
Pursglove
JD

Rawlins
Korkidas
March
Coleman

Hell of a lot of good players left out there. Normington, Moss, Smith and Wray for a start. It shows what depth we have in the squad.

As for the half backs debate. It's only 12 months ago that we supposedly had none. I've chosen Jones over Coleman simply because of his proven pedigree. Also as he played in the 4 Nations for Wales he's been late back in to pre season. I think his sharpness will come back soon. I know a few would want to see him in at Full-Back but I feel that both James H and Moss are better than him in that position.

I can understand why you say that about Feather. Whilst nobody is doubting his defensive ability he is not the quickest player in the world and during pre-season I have been dissapointed by our slowness at the PTB. Maybe trying Obst there may speed it up, maybe not.

Good shout, although I'd swap Korky for Cherryholme. I don't know what everyone else's view is, but I have been impressed with Sheriffe during pre-season. He looks solid is defence and appears to hit and hurt. Sometimes has given the odd silly penalty away, but on the whole a good aquisition.

I have only been wrong once and thats because I thought I was wrong but I was wrong I was right!

Petty authoritarians aren’t man enough to challenge the actions of a person face to face; instead they incite a forum of rumour, innuendo and half truths, and impose rude sanctions to discourage those who dare question fairness.

Anon.

Re: Is it a selection poser for you? : Fri Feb 03, 2012 9:13 am
Two effects of strength in depth are "selection headaches for coaches" and a great opportunity for fans to moan and argue (oops, I mean debate).

I personally don't think it will be until the start of the season proper before we know our best team. By this I mean fitness levels and player understanding of each other. At the moment, both of these need to improve.

In my mind, the "best" team is not always that on paper, but those who play and think like a team.

Players like Buster and Killer are two polar opposites and rather than comparing them they should be seen as a package that compliments the team. They play in the same position but they perform in quite different ways.

The half back dilemma is an interesting one and I am really interested in how Jy-Mel develops. He is going to need consistent game time possibly from a bench position.

Looks like the weather may be against us for Sunday so roll on Batley!

Fair enough.

The reason I chose Chez to start over Korki was that Chez is a good defensive prop where as Korki strength appears to be those blockbusting runs he puts in. I think those runs will be more effective with him coming off the bench against tiring players, especially now the interchanges have been cut from 12 to 10.

Its not stupid

Im saying there is no substitute for speed (in this istance its the speed of the play the ball and acting half)

I observed the game against Bradford very well, being a hooker myself its an area of the game I play close attention to

When we got on the front foot It was mainly Coleman directing play, and found holes for fowards to go in such as Rawlings but what platform it came from is when Obst was in at acting half, he got the tackle man up quick and distributed the ball quick too. A hell of allot quiker than Feather had done all nigh and all last season too, Its not a pop at feather, But Obst simple has the edge in that area. Defensively I do feel feather is good there and without doubt its his strongest asset.

So for me from what Ive seen heard and know about players past history ect

My Strongest Team for the moment would be with everyone fit to choose from mind (irrespective of other views ect including JD)

1. Haythornwaite (wouldn't be my imediate number 1 choice but his pre season form has been real good)

2. Barnett (Although with the high ball I think he is a bit loose but othr than that he is a top class winger for this divison)

3. Tadulala (Still SL class and seems to be forming a decent partnership with barnett)

4. Normington (Leeds are singing his prasies right now, I think hes a potential SL centre we must play him when we have him)

5. Moss ( I highly rate this lad)

6. Coleman (Been great pre season)

7. Jones (hes a class player I think he just needs good game time in order to click again)

8. Shickle

9. Obst (He has the speed we need from the play the ball, and alows a good partnership of Coleman and Jones to start)

10. Korkidas

11. Jones (may not be everyones cup of tea but I think he deserves a shot)

12. Henderson (Solid championship backrow, seriously I do feel the second row is our weakest area)

13. JD (I think this is his best position, now we have some half backs he must play there)

Subs

14 Wray (his impact is past proven)

15. Rawlings (Same as Wray)

16. March (im not a big fan of him but his experinece could help and a he can cover an array of positions)

17. Cherryholme or Sheriffe im not sure which

Others close

Parrata, certainly for me
Duffy, I personaly feel the 2 guys ive picked for the wing are better options
Lawton, ive always liked him but he has been shocking defensively pre season
Smith (great little player, I think maybe loaning him out early season to a Champ 1 club could be the best thing
Feather ( better options chosen ahead of him)
Pursglove (drove Jones close for me)

Others

Shepheard ( i think he deserves a chance at some stage)
Simpson (Not seen enough of this guy)
Hutchinson (is he still there??? I felt his hight out wide was a good asset and certainly should get a go at some stage thats if hes still there lol)
