Frankly he's the best player coach a mid/lower table club like us could hope for. Given the chance most of our league competitors would take him on gladly.
I completely disagree with both of those statements.
A fans capacity for "hope" is huge and could encompass people that are far above the caliber of Paul March. If you had said "he's the best we can afford" then you might have a point, even then it would be arguable since we don't know his salary, rewards or conditions for comparison.
Could you name me which of our competitors would want him over their existing coach?
I have seen him play since his days at Wakefield; he is a fierce competitor with fine rugby skills and brain but he simply goes beyond the boundary of what's acceptable too often. His age his catching him and although his mind is willing his body is becoming less so. He has to make the transition from being a coach who has to come on the pitch to save the day to one who can do this from the sidelines. This team is entirely his - he has been given a budget, has had chance to recruit his team and has had a full pre-season with them. It's up to him to get results.
THIS ISN'T ME HAVING A GO AT HIM PER SE, I'D SAY THE SAME ABOUT ANY COACH IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES.
He was one of our best players against Doncaster but his discipline was simply unacceptable. He knows his record will make him a target, it's up to him to control himself and remonstrate with the referee in a more acceptable fashion. Our team performance was poor.
We started in the same way against Rochdale and you could either say we won because we upped our game when Marchy came on in the second half or they lost because they ran out of steam. Probably a bit of both.
I simply don't know what to make of him - hero one minute, pantomime villain next. However, if we give Leigh the type of start from the last two matches they will murder us.
At his best he is a match winner, but he has demonstrated that he can be the instrument of our downfall too.
