Its not just the dementia, there are many other conditions caused by repeated bangs to the head..
My own problem is balance which varies from normal to looking as if i'm drunk. It very rarely goes to the drunk like effect but you never know when it is going to come on so you restrict the distance you stray from home.
The question here isn’t the effects so much as the cause.
Dementia is a natural occurrence even in the relatively young so it’s very difficult to say whether it was just one of those things or brought on by circumstance.
In the case of a RL player in some cases it will have been but in others it’s probably nothing to do with it but how do you prove it.
This makes compensation hugely difficult, like it or not the game that gets it money via the fans one way or another cannot be expected to compensate every ex pro with the condition, there are limits.
For me the starting point should be the moment the authorities became truly aware of the issue. It’s all to easy to label those in charge as callous or incompetent but in truth they generally go along with the consensus of the time. It’s a bit much to expect a tiny sport to pioneer research on head injuries.
For this reason I’d personally limit it to the last 15 years, years in which the issue has been in the public domain in concerted way.
So bad luck Bobby because you don’t fall into that range and you know it. If you do have issues then you have my condolences but sadly imho no one is to blame in the case of your generation for the simple reason that few outside a medical elite had any idea.
NGBW, I know your issues, mine are not the same but I to have issues that make being out and about tricky at times. Five years ago I had bladder cancer. I’m ok now but it’s left me vulnerable. I’m not incontinent but one day I know I won’t make it to a loo within the five minute max warning I get
it will be embarrassing but I’m prepared.
I bring this up only because I sometimes wonder whether it was random or there was a cause. I smoked as a young man though stopped years before my cancer, was that the cause? When I was smoking it was well known about lung cancer but nobody ever mentioned the hundreds of other things it was meant to cause, bladder cancer being one. Where does it stop? Who do I blame and who do I sue?
I can’t help but think much of this is fuelled by ambulance chasing lawyers, I expect one at my door any day now
It’s a curse if the modern world to me, there comes a time where on Balance you just have to accept, life’s like that, you can’t be compensated for everything, you take the rough with the smooth.
I’m talking in general here not about your issues in particular, obviously I’ve no idea regarding your case and wouldn’t presume.
