WP first fail. : Fri Mar 04, 2022 6:59 am
First of all I forgive him and hope he learns. I do think that tonight was a fail for Willie. Not all his fault by any means but on this occasion I can see what I feel to be errors.

I also accept I’m an armchair coach and what I say has limited value. At the end of the day I watch for 80 minutes and I suspect there is more to it than that :D

Anyway let’s look.

I can’t comment of the first half tactics because there didn’t appear to be any. Second half was a massive improvement but all things are relative.

Not playing Croft was a huge error. I saw him against Hull and he looked just fine. This was the one that baffled me before the match even began.

Murphy has huge potential but it’s a mans game and he isn’t there yet, Army Dave would have been my choice.

Walker should have been on the bench, his versatility makes him a super sub. Millers loss would have been much less with him available.

Fifita needs to start. With him we play, without him we can hold the line whilst he rests. He doesn’t start first we don’t start.

The above issues are all WP’s errors. What we can’t blame him for is the chronic lack of effort in the first half in a game we should have been up for. It shouldn’t need a coaches input to make that happen.

On the plus and there were not many. We battled to the end and actually looked the stronger team in the last 15. Fitness is clearly not an issue and that may be vital this year.

Anybody who still promotes the idea that Kay isn’t a hooker needs a lobotomy. He’s not just the best at the club after a remarkable transformation but one of the better in SL. Better than Hood so far.

Murphy will come back.

Jowitt is the player we hoped for.

Dave remains a star.

Lino. needs a few games and I hope Miller is ok.

Of the players due to return from injury, I don’t see any issue in them coming straight back in so no serious dilemma at least. Only Hood may need some justification as Bowes has been admirable even when out of position.

I think WP took some gambles and they didn’t pay off. But two SR at centre, neither with any real experience and in Pitts case speed was never really on, not even hindsight required.

The writing was on the wall before kick off, but with the two second rowers in the centres Leeds scored with ease, although we helped them with the high tackle near our own line, and poor Lewis Murphy's nightmare high ball, he was never going to catch that, but he'll learn from it
Agree about Kay, the more I see him at hooker the better he looks and Bowes doesn't look out of place.
The scoredline is about right I'd say, because in the last quarter we were better than them, Lino actually started playing and Jowitt began to shine.
Forget it - but we really do need that win against Tolouse and lets hope we have players back and in their true position.
Batch in the centre is a makeshift move. Batch and Pitts in the centres is disaster - proved!

Vasty that's a good account.
Kay most deffo the best no 9 followed by Bowes, not seen anything from Hood to display either.
Lino not ready for a return but will probably get an extended run now..
Jowets now seems settled and loves the confidence shown in him.
Walker must be given first team experience, either from the bench or starting.
I don't agree with the lack of effort, they just didn't have enough posetion in the first half and couldn't get in to any kind of rhythm.
So on to next week and a must bounce back.

I agree with all that.
Harsh on Willie to say its an error not playing Croft. We don't know why he didn't. Everyone would have been on him if he'd broken down in the game.

Being out enthused was the biggest disappointment to me. They were just up for it more.

Good post Vastman felt sorry for Murphy ,Let's hope he can bounce back from it, the same way Kirshaw did last season ,started the season of bad ,but won the fans over and got young player of the year.Agree about Walker to much skill to leave out . .Will get shot down for this but think Walker should be given the lose forward role in place of J C . I also think the wrighting was on the wall when we started with 2 fowards in the centre then lost Miller after 3 minutes. The problem to me the new Injury prone signing are costing us big time and you can not blame W P ,at least we look a lot fitter, and it makes you wonder if it was a very big mistake not signing Hampshire

Haven't watched it back yet but I was behind the posts and could see the overlap developing every time.
Batch and Murphy did some good tackling but there were times when they had 2 overlap before the fullback had even joined the line.
It was all about positional play and with new bodies out wide they just hammered our inexperience.
If that was Lyne and Hall I could have seen us winning though Leeds did play well and that shouldn't be forgotten.

I agree re Walker. I like JC and he remains a valuable squad player, his defence is without question BUT the old adage of 'attack is the best form of defence' should be tried I think. Walker has a rugby brain and should be given an extended run at LF. Added advantage, of course, in a situation like last night he can slot in at Stand Off.
It's very hard to judge how good we were last night, Leeds had far too much speed for us and capitalised fully on our weakness at centre.
Have to admit it they played some very good, fast rugby and their halfbacks -well I wish we had similar quality!

I agree with most of that. Fifita must start alongside Arona in my opinion at prop.
