I seem to remember at the time MC said he wouldn't sack Webster despite how terrible we were.

This was probably because he had either released or sold most of the squad leaving Webster with very little team wise.

Webster went after we let a 20-0 lead go v the then Championship side Leigh in the cup. The final straw I guess. His team that day didn't look that bad
