That's a fair point, slugger, I understand where you're coming from but not being a classic centre doesn't make Ryan a bad player or preclude him from being a good one.

The same argument can be applied to Rob Burrow, he's a great player, but not a great scrum-half in the classical sense. What I mean by that is, he doesn't possess the organising, kicking or passing game that you would associate with a great scrum-half. However, he does have other assets, which make him a good player.

Ryan is OK

However dome people may differ about his good and bad points, but I think all the posters on
here agree this was a good bit of business for us

TCs assessment to me is saying he is good at a lot of things but not at putting his winger away.
He is better than most, unfortunately people want him to be more.

I know it is a stretch but I woud use Mal Meninga as a comparison. If you watch him in the early 80s he is one of the worlds best centres but what he was good at was breaking the line. His winger, whether Sean Day or Eric Grothe got the ball after he broke the line.
He didn't start putting his winger away before the line until later in his career when he started slowing down.

For me Ryan is the same, just probably not quite on the same scale.
He will break the line more often than not, and that is something many teams don't have. His winger won't get the money ball that puts him away until after the break is made. Not a bad thing in itself but doesn't look good when the defense gets you first.

I think that makes him a good centre who will score lots of tries. It doesn't make him Matt Gidley......but then Mal Meninga wasn't Steve Rogers or Brett Kenny either!?!?

But I think that discloses some of his weaknesses, because he has some of each attribute that makes a good centre, not enough of just one attribute. He doesn't have the distribution skills of Lyon or Gidley. He doesn't have the strength of Senior or Maninga, and he doesn't have the defensive skills of, say, Gary Conolly. He doesn't have the guile of Newlove or Lyon. He's a bit of everything but not enough of something.

I hope he does come good, because England needs a good, strong centre, but I think his hype is better than the reality. Of all the other recent centres we have had, including some of the more workmanlike ones, I would put most above Atkins. Domic. Evans. JD. Gleeson.

unfortunately there is only more of the same to come!!!
He has failed to develop from a exiting raw prospect (I thought we had got a future star on our hands!!) and in many ways has gone backwards.
It was a kear master stroke knocking him out for whatever we got.
Under a new coach who knows, but failed to go on to what a lot of people here thought he would.
Good luck to the lad, but at the moment, I wouldn't pick him in front of the centres we've got.
And the cash came in handy!!!!

I think he is one of a long history of players who has started to believe his own hype. Scott Moore would be another recently.

Aktins became a player at Wakie I would watch out for but for Warrington I hardly noticed he was there.
