I'd go with wanting Trinity to be strong but, if the competition was doomed, there would be little point ?
Surely, in an ideal world, you would want SL to be the best professional sport in the world and Trinity to be at the top of the pile, rather than a mickey poor competition.

The game needs to be strong for the teams achievements to have any merit. Imagine if the game went down the pan but Wakey won the GF every year.... on Eastmoor park park in front of 300 people.

Or we progressed the challenge cup final and we all got to make the pilgrimage to watch it at Oakwell...

But I don't think the cap is such that teams can do what Wigan did in the early nineties and snap up every decent player they can, because they were the only fully professional club. It will just allow some clubs to pay their star players, often those they've nurtured, what they need to pay them to keep them. Tom Johnstone is bound to go elsewhere at some point, because a time will come when he wants to win something. It is now more likely that he will stay in English RL because the bigger clubs can compete with the alternatives outside of English RL.

I personally don't think it will make any difference to players moving to the NRL, the experience is a main factor they go, they will always get their players and will always pay more. We just play second fiddle I'm afraid :D

The marquee allowance will not, in any way, prevent players from going to the NRL or RU; their budgets dwarf that of RL and they can pay a young player more than he's ever dreamt of and certainly more than SL could ever afford, marquee allowance or not.

This is a way of increasing the SC by the backdoor, without forcing less wealthy SL clubs to vote to do so; because that would be like turkeys voting for Xmas. It satisfies the wealthier club owners in the medium term - but doesn't really address the problem. That would be solved by having a broadcast deal that allows a greater disbursement of TV monies - and by clubs upping their game in terms of alternative income streams.

According to todays paper Wigan have named George Williams and Sam Tomkins as their marquee players. That frees up a large chunk of their salary bill !

Exactly! The increase won't matter a jot in contrast with the NRL and rah rah budgets. However the playing field across SL has levelled somewhat over the last couple of years & I'm sure the wealthier clubs will wetting themselves at the prospect of spending a couple of hundred grand extra, which they know the have nots can't do. Especially those wealthier clubs which have made shocking coaching appointments recently!

They still have to cover their wages and any SL club can do the same.
What point are you trying to make ?

As I understand it some or is it all of a marquee's salary is exempt from the salary cap, so the club can spend more in total.
