Apart from his audience and the producers at the BBC; I guess they expect the kind of humour that appeals to the target audience of the R1 breakfast show - which I'm guessing is not you, or indeed me.
I think you have to progress through radio stations as you get older, to avoid feeling like an old fart at a party full of youngsters. I found my home on 6 Music, where I feel very welcome; the music is excellent, and the presenter doesn't feel the need to act like the class clown - with a room full of people braying in the background to create a false sense of fun and jollity, a technique annoyingly coined by Chris Evans and Chris Moyles.
